Richard Krull, general manager, announced the Ukiah BC particleboard mill will open June 1 after testing in April. The 85 million ft3 per year plant operates 24 hours daily on three shifts, employing about 120–125 workers mostly from Ukiah. Raw materials include redwood and fir shavings. waste and sander dust are reused in production.
California Assembly hopeful Gary Antolini will be introduced to Ukiah area residents at a 7 30 p m reception at the Manor Inn. Mendocino County Republicans for Action announce the event with co chairmen Bill Bennett and Robert Cavendar. Barbara Antolini will campaign with him.
The Committee to Strengthen County Government polled 2,000 residents in the second supervisorial district. Among 350 responses the top concerns listed were taxes, schools, welfare, unemployment, industrial development, youth, ecology, agriculture, and lack of federal housing funds. The group plans to endorse candidates who commit programs for local problem solving.
Mendo-Lake Office Equipment Co of Ukiah will furnish the Ukiah Mendocino Library building at Perkins and Main Street. The city council awarded the job Thursday for 13 1154, bidding 1353 below the Kappeler Associates estimate. Phillips Furniture and J H Comey Co also bid. The library is built by John Wagner and Associates with state and federal funds and will be run by Mendocino County.
Ukiah lawyers plan a class action accusing the Department of Mental Hygiene of breach of contract under Short-Doyle guidelines and failing to follow legislative timelines. The suit lists five county supervisors and hospital officials as defendants with Frank Sperry as plaintiff.
Two Mendocino Lake area seniors advance toward a 1000 top prize in the 25th Bank of America Achievement Awards with zone winners Mark Gellinger and Kenneth Parlet earning $250 minimum and a chance at the $1000 area final in Sacramento on May 11. Other zone awards totaled 100 for second place and 75 or 50 for lower placements across liberal arts and science and mathematics.
