City and Ukiah fire district reach 10-year contract

The City of Ukiah and the Ukiah Valley fire protection district near finalizing a 10-year agreement. The city will buy the district’s rolling stock while delivering fire protection and administration, under review by a joint ad hoc committee. Fire Chief Ken Donohue calls it a major step for coordinated services at reasonable cost. The city council unanimously approved. district directors are expected to sign next meeting.

Ukiah Council Rejects Endorsement of Marin Aviation

The Ukiah City Council declined to back Marin Aviation in seeking a PUC permit for an air taxi or feeder service to Ukiah. Councilman Norgard urged no position while supporting the airport commission’s view that scheduled service to Ukiah is feasible, and noted past airline fee issues. The council also pursued joint fire department planning and budget talks, including a 39,000 dollar stock purchase and potential second fire station site near the northern city limits.

Wood asks utilities break for elderly at city meeting

Councilman Barry Wood urged a special April agenda item to study a possible across the board utility rate cut for elderly Medicare and Medi Cal card holders. He noted public uproar over sewer and utility hikes and cited a 4 1 vote on taxi rate increases as context for aiding seniors. The city manager and staff were asked to investigate feasibility of a $1 to $1 50 reduction for elderly ratepayers.

The man accused of attempting to kidnap Princess Anne, Tan Ball, was held without bail in Bow Street as police revealed possible associates. Ball faced a week without bail while authorities hunt accomplices, and security around the royal family was tightened nationwide.

Mendocino College reports spring enrollment surge reaches 2312

Total enrollment for the spring semester stands at 2 312 up 867 students or 60 percent from the college's first semester last fall. President Pete DeVries praises community support as enrollment grows across full time and part time programs in Mendocino Lake counties and Fort Bragg.

Kissinger Doubts Reimposition of Arab Oil Embargo

Secretary of State Henry Kissinger said the Arab nations are unlikely to reimpose the oil embargo at their June 1 meeting. He noted a unanimous vote would be needed for action and expressed optimism on Middle East peace efforts while urging restraint on the Golan front. He also addressed Nixon’s Moscow trip and Western Europe ties amid impeachment concerns.

February costs push living expenses to new highs

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a 1.3 percent February rise in the cost of living driven by higher food and fuel prices. Over the past year, living costs jumped 10.2 percent, the first time that level has been reached since December 1974, with spendable earnings dropping about 0.6 percent from January.

Ukiahan held in kidnap and robbery case

A 19 year old Ukiahan, Leah Joseph Frease, was arrested by Mendocino and Lake County deputies in Redwood Valley on charges of kidnapping armed robbery and grand theft auto in connection with the early Saturday assault of Kathleen Cain near Lake County. Cain was accosted outside a tavern forced to disrobe and blindfolded after being robbed of $37 and two cases of beer. she escaped as deputies pursued the suspect and Frease was booked en route to Lake County. The warrant names kidnapping armed robbery and grand theft auto with possible additional charges related to the attempted assault.
