Mills predicts Phase IV as inflation cure in CNBC interview

Rep Wilbur Mills chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee says Phase III wage price guidelines are insufficient and anticipates a tougher Phase IV. He cites 25 percent price hikes in department store products and backs extending Nixon wage and price controls through May. Senate leaders say amendments will push tighter controls beyond Phase III.

Ukiah Aims to Make City Beautiful Week Apr 30 May 6

Community Action Week runs April 30 to May 6 in Ukiah with a goal to make the city the most Beautiful City in the World. The Golden Broom Awards open to individuals and businesses for most improved appearance. Entry forms are at the Chamber office. The Ukiah Garden Club Tour and Tea is May 6 from 1 to 5 p.m. at Garden House 1203 W. Clay Street with a $1.50 donation supporting community projects.

Ukiah Festival Parade invites entries for 1973 event

Entries are being accepted for the 1973 Ukiah Festival Parade to be held June 2 in Ukiah with the theme The Brotherhood of Man. The parade features an expanded band competition and new antique and classic auto categories with multiple cash prizes and trophies across divisions. deadline is May 1 and entry forms are available from the Ukiah Festival Parade Committee.

Drowning death casts shadow over Ukiah family

Funeral services for Donald Le Roy Jones 31 are set at Zimmerman Mortuary at 2 p.m. He drowned while skin diving for abalone off the Mendocino Coast. Jones lived in Ukiah thirty years and worked for Masonite Corp. He is survived by his wife and four children. Interment in Ukiah Cemetery.

Floods leave thousands homeless in southern states

Floods over the weekend swept across southern states causing an estimated 75 million dollars in damage and leaving thousands homeless. Tennessee, Mississippi, and Alabama faced heavy rainfall with 2,400 Tennessee families evacuated and Chattanooga losses around 60 million dollars. Officials warned of more rain as federal aid requests and disaster declarations expanded.
