Reagan signs welfare bills to save students in age change

Gov Ronald Reagan signed emergency legislation to protect about 29 000 AFDC recipients aged 18 through 20 from welfare loss due to California's age of majority act raising legal adulthood to 18. The measures also avert a 34 million revenue loss for community colleges and keep eligibility for disabled or employed students pursuing education.

Supervisors Oppose Behr Wild Rivers Bill Endorse Collier Plan

The board voted unanimously to oppose State Sen. Peter Behr’s Wild Rivers bill and endorsed Sen. Randolph Collier’s similar measure. They noted a 25 year Eel River moratorium would reverse earlier support for the English Ridge dam plan, while Collier’s bill would fund study and expand water and recreation benefits without naming the Eel. Letters opposing Behr were read, while Ukiah Rod and Gun Club backed Behr.

Brooktrails Improvement District Funds Approved for Phases One and Two

The Brooktrails Improvement District receives 283000 dollars via certified check for phases one and two of the road project. The county board accepts the improvements with a four fifths vote after a non agenda item moved the meeting. Supervisor Ted Galletti opposed the road types in the development and the district extends Brooktrails timing to December 31 1973. A second 283000 dollar payment will follow once phases three and four roads are ready for county acceptance and will be placed in a trust for upkeep of the Brooktrails road system.

Hospital conference cancelled over Reagan illness in Sacramento

A planned meeting between Ukiah Supervisors Barbero Galletti Boynton Clarke and Gov. Reagan to discuss Mendocino State Hospital closing was postponed due to Reagan being ill. The group will reconvene next Monday at 4 30 p m to review economic impact outpatient care and staffing and transfers related to the hospital closing.

Wallace victory shakes Florida Democratic primary and Muskie falters

Florida voters vaulted George Wallace to a commanding primary win with 42 percent, while Edmund Muskie collapsed to fourth. Hubert Humphrey surged to second, Henry Jackson rose to third, and McGovern and Lindsay split the left fringe. Wallace claimed 75 convention delegates as the race for the Democratic nomination grew chaotic.

U S Air Force Trainer Makes Safe Emergency Landing at Ukiah

A two engine U S Air Force navigational trainer based at Hamilton Air Force Base made an emergency landing at Ukiah municipal airport yesterday evening after engine trouble developed during a coastal flight over the Pacific. The Ukiah Flight Service Center was alerted at 6 02 p m and the aircraft landed at 6 39 p m. Mechanics from Hamilton AFB work today to determine the malfunction cause.

Planning panel backs denial of Willits variance request

The Mendocino County supervisors 3 2 upheld the planning commission denial of Ronald Luzzi’s variance to build on a small triangular lot near Willits. Health department septic permit issues and potential road widening risks were cited as key factors.

Benbow Dam Talks Move Toward Dam Replacement and Fish Plans
