Several interviewees cited personal experiences influencing their views.
POMONA UP I reports Project Clean Air director Ernest S Starkman says environmental regulations may close city areas to all but special permit holders by 1985. He warns permit systems could require drivers to justify entry while keeping other zones off limits. He also suggests clean air rules might curb backyard barbecues due to smoke and grease emissions.
A quirky Sunday column surveys varied topics from Soviet mail systems to St. Patrick Week at the Buena Vista in San Francisco. It notes California’s new alcohol program director, concerns over pediatric amphetamines, a talk with Dr. Joel Fort on meaning of life, canned foods trends, Greyhound choir humor, and upcoming events including Patton on stage, abalone season opening, St Patrick’s Day breakfast in Ukiah, and a local golf tournament.
Two Ukiah youths suffered minor injuries when their small foreign car overturned on Old Calpella Road near noon Sunday. The 16 year old driver Steven Stutsman and passenger Daniel Sewell were northbound when over-steering led to a broadside crash. Relatives transported them to Mendocino Community Hospital. Bob Buchanan reported a magnetic sign stolen from his parked car on S State Street.
Six individuals were arrested Saturday and Friday in Mendocino County on drunk driving and related offenses. Darrel Wayne Eklund twenty of San Leandro and John Allen Wiley seventy one of Willits faced DUI and license issues, while Richard Lee Bolton twenty of Laytonville and Michael E Staffan fifty one of Talmage were also charged. Thomas Pike thirty three of Ukiah received a ten day weekend sentence after a DUI conviction, and Douglas Marvin Smith twenty five of Fort Bragg drew the same weekend sentence plus a fine for DUI.
Funeral services were held this afternoon at Zimmerman Mortuary for Cecil Thomas Hagne 49 Ukiah who died Saturday at a local hospital. He was a millworker for Crawford Lumber Co native of Covelo and lived his life in this community. Survivors include widow Alma Hayue four children Carrie Jack Mary Collett Jack Scribner and Tony Scribner 16 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Services were conducted by Rev Vance Wise. Pallbearers were Paul Jack Robert Collett Columbus Speers Albert Wilson Houston Willis and Louis Grivette. Burial was in Ukiah Cemetery.
Funeral services for David Aguiar 35 of Ukiah killed in a Friday truck crash near Newhall. Survived by widow Virginia and two sons Michael and Anthony of Ukiah, sister Joyce Debbler Huntington Beach, mother Ruby Aguiar Ukiah. Services 10 a.m. Zimmerman Mortuary officiated by Fr Roger Lamoureux. Burial Ukiah Catholic Cemetery. Pallbearers Richard Pardini Allen Giardini Ernest Williams Albert Pardini Angelo Pardini William Phillips.
Stoddard warned that the proposed My Ranch planned development would endanger prime hill land, raise costs for buses and buildings, increase fire risk with 25 000 to 30 000 new residents, worsen erosion from new roads, and block public access to Bureau of Land Management property and the Eel River. The motion failing 4-3 halted the plan with a 10 day appeal window for the developer.
Jack J. Russell of Boonville, 21, was charged with resisting arrest and battery on a peace officer after he allegedly swung at Paul Titus, the Anderson Valley Judicial District constable, during a disturbance outside Anderson Valley High School following a basketball game.
