United Press International reports that Pete Pettit finished the NBA season with a 29.2 points per game average after scoring 27 to lift the St. Louis Hawks to a 132-130 overtime win over the Syracuse Nationals. Dolph Schayes set a record by playing in his 59th game, while Detroit beat Minneapolis 123-118 and Cliff Hagan sealed the Hawks victory with a final horn tip-in.

DeMarco Wins in Comeback Start in Boston

Tony DeMarco defeats Curley Monroe of Worcester by TKO at 1:09 of the eighth round in a scheduled ten rounds. It is DeMarco’s first bout in nearly 14 months after retirement following a KO loss to Virgil Akins January 21, 1958. Monroe suffers an eight fight winless streak since October first. Monroe weighed 147 pounds, a half pound more than DeMarco.

Campy Helps Drysdale Worthington Knee Sound

Don Drysdale, wobbly in 1958, regains form with Roy Campanella in a Dodgers spring session. Campanella, coaching from a wheelchair, convinced Drysdale to abandon sidearm for a three quarter motion as he stretched shutout innings in a 7 6 win. In other exhibitions, the Phillies beat Milwaukee 13 1, Washington topped New York 12, and San Francisco beat Chicago 10 5. Worthington’s leg injury scare eased as X rays showed no operation needed, heading to Birmingham to join the Giants camp.

Pistol Club Sets Shoot For Sunday

The Ukiah Rifle and Pistol Club will host a special open target shoot Sunday at their 50 foot indoor gallery range with Napa Santa Rosa and Sebastopol marksmen among participants. Nearly 25 shooters attended a first meeting for a revived pistol section and more are welcome to practice and join the club and NRA. Ed Axt named temporary pistol section chairman as weekly Thursday practice sessions are planned.

Penn State Wins in Track Title Appeal

Penn State is declared winner of the ICJA track and field team championship after a committee reversal of the original result from the February meet at Madison Square Garden. Manhattan College had led until Henry White’s third place was changed to fourth in the 60 yard high hurdles.
