California Senate panel endorses bill banning SST flights

The Senate Health and Welfare Committee backed Sen. Beilenson's bill to prohibit SST takeoffs from California airports, with a split vote and threats of prosecution for violators. Beilenson argues health and environmental risks from sonic booms and pollution, while Boeing and North American Rockwell push to preserve the project, warning job losses if scrapped.

Cars Collide on N State Street in Homeward Rush

A two car wreck on North State Street yesterday evening caused major damage to both vehicles but no injuries. Willard John Fulwider of Willits, 47, northbound, allegedly turned into a service driveway and was cited for drunk driving and open container. Marianne Garbocci of Ukiah, 24, southbound, collided with him.

Rain Likely Through Friday Across Northwestern California

Northwestern California forecast shows rain likely through Friday with little temperature change. Ukiah highs to 53 dropping to 42 tonight, gale warnings north of Pt Arena as southerly winds build. March 1971 and 1970 data show Hi Lo readings and rainfall totals around 29.57 last year 46.61.

Objectives outlined for lumber market in Western states

Representatives from 12 Western states outlined objectives to keep lumber market competitive in construction. WWPA members heard talks on non-residential, industrial, multi family and single family markets with aims to influence markets, boost lumber's position, and promote new applications. Industry leaders forecast large gains in 1971 for housing and modular units, with 800000 modular units and 100000 in three dimensional housing. apartment starts projected at 1.8 million, the best in 20 years.

New charges against Barnes in burglary case

Robert Clyde Barnes, 27, of Ukiah, was arrested by Ukiah police during a burglary at Foote's Liquor and Sporting Goods on N State Street. He faces additional charges of grand theft firearm. Investigator Earl Friend led the arrest. Separate Fort Bragg sheriff's report notes a petty theft and malicious mischief: thermometer and rain gauge stolen from a shed with $15 loss and $10 door damage.

Drunk Driving Charge Follows Ukiah Police Arrest

Albert Rodger Young, 20, Redwood Valley, was arrested by Ukiah police and booked on drunk driving and related charges after a 9 17 p m stop. Witnesses linked him to a hit and run near Palace Hotel at 8 58 p m. Investigators continue probing. no hit and run charges yet. Arresting officers were Richard Perry Paul McCoey and Sgt Richard Borecky. No license Alvin Phillips, 34, Yuba City, surrendered to county jail on a traffic warrant for failure to appear. charges include driving with a suspended license and driving without a license.

Mrs Williams, Ukiah Resident, 97, Dies

Louella Williams of Ukiah dies in a local hospital at 97. Graveside rites set for 2 p.m. Friday at Ukiah Cemetery. She was a retired school teacher and lifelong Ukiah resident, daughter of early settlers E S Williams. Survivors include sister Mrs Russelle Fallas of Antioch and sister-in-law Mrs Melva Williams, plus eight nieces and nephews. Friends may call at Eversole Mortuary tomorrow until 1 30 p.m. Dr E W J Schmitt will officiate.

Missing MSH man found in restaurant

Ukiah police arrest Nick John Dorrell 22 of Overland Park Kansas at a local restaurant for escape and ward walkaway from Mendocino State Hospital. A patron paid his meal and charges dropped. Bail set at 5500. he was booked in city jail. Separate arrest: Patsy Marine Cavanaugh 26 of Ukiah on drunk driving warrant.

Inmates Build Bleachers For Fort Bragg Little League

Parlin Fork Jaycees and Fort Bragg inmates collaborate on a community project to erect two bleachers at the Fort Bragg Little League field. Lt. Charles M. Buchanan and School Superintendent Daniel Mulvihill arrange plans to ensure liability waiver, with Fort Bragg Rental and Boise Cascade supplying equipment and lumber. Inmates dedicate evenings and weekends to prep fabrication.

Pistol stolen from Rod’s Liquor and Sporting Goods

Rod Palmer reported a theft of a .38 caliber automatic pistol from his N State Street display counter to Ukiah police on Wednesday. The Llama auto pistol had a four inch barrel and serial number 473895 with checkered wood grips.
