Board delays plea for more probation staff and funds

Chief Probation Officer Tom Martin sought approval to hire a deputy probation officer and a halftime clerk funded by transferring 8 736 from contingencies to the department budget. Two state mandated diversion programs for drunk drivers and first time offenders lack county funds, while SB 90 governs state payments and tax limits. Supervisor Ted Galletti was absent. others questioned legality and prepared to pursue claims with the state.

Mendocino County Hires Field Assistant Post Delayed

County Farm Advisor Bill Brooks sought a field assistant to tackle biological control and pest issues in pear and grape crops. POWs Return to Hawaii Amid Cheers and Alohas

Four Starlifter planes carrying 80 former U S prisoners of war landed in Hawaii with crowds cheering despite rain. Birthdays were celebrated for Maj. Orson Swindell III and Maj. John C. Blevins on the flight home from the Philippines. Lt. Col. Kenneth North led the first step from the first plane, while Col. James Kasler and Col. Gordon Larsen spoke for later crews. The group praised leaders and the American people as the flights continued to Texas and California destinations.

Pifer's son to testify in Moran murder trial

Klee Accuses IRS of Huge Swindle in Tax Protest

Ukiah tax practitioner Oscar Klee, a former judge and supervisor, leads a taxpayers group named TIT FOR TAT charging the IRS with a billion dollar fraud over installment loan interest deductions. He says he filed no tax liability for 1966 1967 and 1968 and seeks a civil court challenge to test constitutionality.

Hearing set for Feliz suspension appeal on March 28

John Feliz of Elk, represented by Leo Cook, will appeal his suspension as deputy appraiser before the civil service commission at 9 a.m. in the courthouse supervisors chambers. The August 26 suspension by Assessor Webb Brown, initially unspecified, was later set for 30 days.
