Barbero seeks Rule 25 move to reopen Haven's Neck case

The Mendocino County Board of Supervisors debated public beach access on Haven's Neck, with Supervisor Al Barbero moving to invoke Rule 25 to reconsider the Feb 23 decision upholding a planning commission requirement for a public shoreline access path. The vote to invoke Rule 25 was 3-2 with Banker and Avila opposed.

Expanded program for Mendocino State Hospital

Ukiah supervisors approved a resolution to designate Mendocino State Hospital as a Community Mental Health Training and Research Institute while continuing patient care. The plan aims to expand research and training, address personnel shortages, and rename the facility. The board passed the resolution 5 to 0 with officials including Dr. Waldo Cook backing the move.

County approves drainage project to end flood woes near Redwood Valley

Public Works Director Budge Campbell told supervisors that a joint agreement with the state highway department will install drainage under Highway 101 and along School Way to Uva Drive and a nearby creek. The county will maintain drainage outside the state right of way. The plan includes street drains along the county road. The board approved the agreement 5 to 0.

An early morning fire at Mendocino Coast hospital damaged heating and refrigerator rooms, delaying the $3 million facility’s planned April opening. Fire crews controlled the flames within an hour. cause to be investigated.

Reagan Welfare Reform Plan Proposed for California

Gov. Ronald Reagan unveiled a sweeping 70 point welfare reform plan aimed at trimming relief rolls and saving about 575 million dollars. The proposal would require able bodied recipients to work, tighten Medi Cal benefits, close loopholes, and push for a 50 50 cost share with counties for AFDC while expanding cuts and new eligibility rules across the welfare system.

San Francisco Mayor Joseph Alioto charged before a Senate panel that six federal agencies leaked raw confidential material to Look Magazine writers. Contempt charge against Curry dropped in Ukiah case

Robert Curry a 25 year old Daily Journal reporter photographer was arrested February 8 by sheriff officials on verbal orders from Ukiah Justice Court Judge Hale McCowen Jr. The district attorney refused to file a complaint and charges were dropped after Curry refused to surrender his firm. Curry was freed on bail and his camera and film were returned later that day. His attorney argued officers had no power to arrest for indirect contempt outside the courtroom.

Scouting fund drive opens in Ukiah at Palace Hotel

A Yokayo District Scouting fund-raising drive begins with a 7:30 breakfast Thursday at the Palace Hotel in Ukiah. Chairmen Carrol Ornbaun Bill Fernandez and Al Nicolaisen lead the effort to engage local businessmen and Scout parents. Volunteers to assist are urged to contact committee members.
