After a 5 5 deadlock the Mendocino County Committee on School District Organization voted 7 3 with one absent to send a proposed junior college district and a 3.5 million dollar bond to the State Board of Education and county voters. A. J. Gray switched from no to yes citing voter risk while others opposed debated trustee numbers and tax base as a 4 0 cent levy plus potential overrides. The measure now goes to Sacramento for state approval ahead of the September deadline.

He calls it the only realistic approach to living with alcohol and notes the program would be shaped by proper authorities with further research needed on attitude and behavior changes, adding the formal school system is the most practical place to learn to drink.

Avalanche disaster claims Swedish tourists lives in Austria
In Salzburg an avalanche swept a bus carrying 38 people over a 164 foot precipice. Fourteen young victims died at once and a 15th died later in hospital. Most deaths occurred when the bus rear struck a tree after the plunge.
