Kennedy project EIS okayed with modifications

Kennedy plans 24 condominium units on a knoll off San Jacinto Drive faced resident concerns over density traffic erosion and privacy. The city planning commission accepted the environmental impact report with changes including fewer units, more parking, north facing units, enhanced landscaping, and moved south-side units to the north to protect neighbors. Kennedy urged setting a firm unit count and agreed to submit tentative subdivision maps after approvals.

Nixon seeks release of U S diplomats amid Arab threats

President Nixon sent a State Department official to Khartoum to win the release of two American diplomats held under death threat by Black September guerrillas after six to eight attackers seized envoys at the Saudi Embassy. The militants demanded the release of Arab prisoners and warned of executions.

Million Dollar Malicious Prosecution Suit Aimed at Rader

Thrasher Equipment owner Elbridge Thrasher of Ukiah filed a suit exceeding one million dollars for malicious prosecution against Richard Rader Ventura attorney. The complaint notes prior Thrasher rulings in a defamation case favoring Thrasher and accuses Rader of harming Thrasher’s reputation through a long campaign and media coverage. Thrasher seeks punitive damages of one million and general damages of fifty thousand plus a restraining order.

Mardi Gras at St Marys Weekend Fundraiser

St Marys school hosts its fourth annual Mardi Gras at the Fairgrounds Saturday and Sunday. Doors open at 10 a.m. with entertainment, food, and games. a sold out ball runs 6:30 p.m. to 2 a.m. Saturday. Sunday features the choir, Heritage Youth dancers, and Magic Arama plus a major auction and prize drawings. General admission is $1 with prizes including a pickup, a color TV, a freezer, a Yamaha Enduro, gift stamps, and a bicycle.

Gunmen surrender to Sonoma deputies in Sebastopol

Two unidentified gunmen surrendered to Sonoma County sheriff's deputies in Sebastopol after holding as many as eight hostages for over six hours at a farmhouse. Deputies were wounded earlier when the suspects opened fire two miles north of Sebastopol, triggering a manhunt as helicopter and bloodhound units joined the search.

NCCSA plots enlarged board and regional role

The North Coast Counties Supervisors Association executive committee in Ukiah approved policy statements to widen influence and consider a fulltime staff. A nine member committee will draft recommendations for an April Eureka meeting on budgeting staffing and cost sharing, with Ukiah set for a March 8 meeting.
