A group of 30 House Republicans urged a congressional investigation into the Selective Service System amid claims of inefficiency in manpower mobilization for the Vietnam war. They cited delays, unclear priority, and deferment rules as areas needing scrutiny and reforms.
Ukiah Unified School District trustees vote 4 2 to retain no 8th grade commencement now or in the future. Absent Bev Broaddus. Dean HalWEeP objects but not present. Parents from Redwood Valley Calpella urge graduation. Leo Cook and Augie Solomon oppose abolition. Board approves Ukiah high school summer school program with five week sessions June 27 to July 28 at multiple sites.
Casper Cap Kroh a Willits police officer and former deputy sheriff announced his candidacy for sheriff coroner in the June 7 primary. He served in World War II Normandy and Okinawa, lives on Center Valley Road with his wife Jerline and five children, and has four years as resident deputy sheriff plus prior service as a Willits officer.
Sacramento reports a 24 point Petris Knox package seeks uniform 25 percent valuation by 1971 72 with stiff penalties for skipped assessments. Gov Brown backs reform as indictments in several counties highlight a systemwide audit focus and calls for end to secrecy in records.
Yesterday marked the first day candidates could file for elective county offices. Nine individuals filed including Congress member Don H. Clausen seeking reelection to California's First District, and Sheriff Reno Bartolomie. Others include Luke Yates for sheriff, Mary Gilley for county clerk recorder, Viola Richardson for county clerk recorder, W. L. Brown for assessor, Joe Scaramella and Harvey Sawyers for supervisor District 3, Glen D. Swope for supervisor District 3 opposing Sawyers, and Henry Bahnsen for Round Valley constable.
Welton Edward Trumble a Romer Ranch resident 53 suffered major chest and rib injuries when his pickup ran off the road and hit a tree then rolled trapping him about 300 feet south of the Van Arsdale Dam He survived after a passerby found him and highway patrol rushed blood from the blood bank to Hillside Community Hospital.
In Aden a hand grenade attack on a patroling British army jeep wounded two soldiers. The troops returned fire injuring an Arab. It marked the first terrorist incident since mid January.
President Johnson urged rapid action to create a redwood national park in California but House Interior Committee will not act this year. No hearings expected and floor debate unlikely. Rep. Sisk and Rep. Rivers voiced slim chances for passage this session with possible brief hearings next year.
President Johnson sent a comprehensive program to Congress to reorganize HEW health functions and fund state and community health planning. He seeks expanded nutrition for disadvantaged children, hot breakfasts likely funded, and a major shift in school lunch spending. He also calls for elderly meal centers, alcoholism research, and higher birth control research funding.
Weather observations show February 1966 high of 62 and low of 38 on the 28th with noon readings and rainfall totaling 32.02 inches for the period. The Ukiah Fire Department Weather Observer notes Today’s noon high around 42 and low around 35 with similar patterns to February 1965.

US officials describe the Soviet Venus 3 landing as a major milestone in Russia’s planetary program. Dr Edward C Welsh notes Russia allocated about 25 percent of launches to moon Mars and Venus, versus 6 percent by the United States. Venus 3 marks Russia’s first success in 16 attempts. U.S. Mars Venus plans remain uncertain.

A 1-year-old welder faces arraignment in Superior Court on soliciting under cover policemen in a plot to poison Black people nationwide. Herman Henry was arrested at his Sun Valley home after an undercover probe. He proposed four distribution centers to send poisoned food samples to Black recipients, financed by selling his invention.
