Rush for Redwood Park Bill Moves through House Panel
The House Interior Committee rushed a bill to create a Redwood National Park in California to meet a deadline. The measure would cover about 25,300 acres at an estimated $45 million, far smaller than a Senate version at 66,000 acres and over $100 million. Rep. William F. Ryan added acreage around Redwood Creek to protect the emerald mile, after earlier attempts to include Lost Man Creek and Skunk Cabbage Creek areas. Chairman Wayne Aspinall said a conference committee would draft the final bill, aiming for quick House passage with limited floor controversy.
