St Mary's Priest Celebrates 25 Years in Ukiah

Father Celestine Quinlan OFM Cap marks 25 years in the priesthood with a Solemn High Mass at St. Mary's of the Angels Church in Ukiah. He was ordained in Ireland in 1929 and has served at Ukiah Willits Santa Ynez Wilmington New York Maryland and back to Ukiah. The event draws clergy and friends from nearby parishes and the Bay area, with a letter from Governor Goodwin Knight among greetings.

Hot weather to persist in Northwestern California region

Forecasts indicate fair skies through Tuesday with morning coastal fog patches. Inland areas will warm with high humidity. temperatures reach the upper 80s to low 90s in Napa Santa Rosa Ukiah and nearby locales. Northwest winds 12 to 25 mph along the coast, with Fort Bragg area also fair and a slight temperature change near the coast.

Four Injured In Weekend Traffic Crashes In County

The California Highway Patrol reports four people injured in weekend automobile and truck crashes on the Redwood Highway near Ukiah. Thomas A. Canales 21 of San Francisco was minorly hurt after his van hit a trailer and plunged 30 feet down an embankment. Sherman Lewis Wiles 54 of Yuba City was cited for spilling a load. James Ferguson Jr. 31 of Eureka sustained major injuries after a left turn attempt without a signal led to a collision with Murry Sloane 32 of Encino. Walter Vandepas of Los Angeles rode with Glenn B. Dickey 53 of Hollywood in a crash near Ukiah, Dickey cited for drunk driving and Vandepas treated at Ukiah General Hospital. Christine Schafer 26 Calpella was injured in a separate drunk driving crash involving her husband Willie Schafer 40 as their car struck trees on the Redwood Highway.

Plane Crash Traps Two Men Near Half Moon Bay

A light two seat PT26 trainer driven by Harrison Devere and William Spindler crashed in a field near Half Moon Bay after fog hindered visibility. Both men suffered compound fractures and head injuries and were rescued after more than three hours. In another incident at Martin s Beach Michael Loveland and an unnamed rescuer narrowly escaped powerful surf. both were saved and required no medical treatment.

Hospital Bulletin Truman Rallies Today

Former President Truman’s condition improved and somewhat less serious while the enteritis improved greatly. A special bulletin on his status placed him on the serious list though he was less sedated, with better color, more alert, and in better spirits after a restful night. Temperature stood at 99.4 as he took food by mouth.

Guatemala Rebels Threaten Air Attack on Capital

In Tegucigalpa a rebel broadcast set a 7 am PDT deadline for Guatemala to recognize rebel forces. Gen Castillo Armas demanded the new government oust and arrest all Communists, including ex-President Jacobo Arbenz Guzman. Diaz, newly named president, had not yet responded.

Ukiah Pine Hikes Non-Union Workforce Amid Strike

Ukiah Pine Lumber Company in Potter Valley increased non-union staff to about 30 to 40 as the AFL Lumber and Sawmill Workers strike enters its second week. The plant began partial operation with 15 new workers and aims to full operation soon, while other Mendocino mills face ongoing picketing and reduced payrolls. The strike, backed by wage demands, has disrupted coastal industry and lumber shipments, with regional effects on loans and fruit box supply.

China to Return Ship Not Cargo to USSR

Formosa sources say Nationalist China seized the Soviet tanker Tuapse with 8000 tons of cargo en route to Red China at Kaohsiung. The 9000-ton tanker will be released, cargo removed, within a couple of days, with the ship returning to the USSR this week.

Ukiah Youth Drowns In Feather River Near Gridley

Funeral services were held for Eugene Eisenhauer a 19 year old Ukiah High School student who drowned in the Feather River near Gridley after swimming with five companions. Survived by parents Olin B Eisenhauer and others two brothers and two sisters. He planned to join the Air Force this fall and had lived in Live Oak until a year and a half ago. The body was recovered from 20 feet after companions failed to rescue him due to winded condition.

Coast Boy Dies of Shooting Accident

Funeral services for James T. Turnbull 15 of Fort Bragg are set for 2 pm today. He accidentally shot himself in the head with a .22 rifle in the family kitchen on Willits road and died at Redwood Coast Hospital Saturday morning. He is survived by his parents and two sisters. He recently graduated from Fort Bragg Junior High School. Cannarr Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Willits Man Sentenced to San Quentin for Forgery

Melvin Frye, 25, of Willits, found guilty by a Superior court judge on four counts of forgery. Judge Hale McGowen ordered concurrent sentences to be served at San Quentin. Frye, on parole from the state prison, faces up to 14 years for forgery.

Military junta formed in Guatemala and communists banned
