Dan ny Morse pitched a two hitter as Bruce Zimmerman led the hitting with two singles and Cookie Wattenburger starred at third. Masonite managed only two hits by Mike Turner and scored on a walk, stolen base, passed ball, and wild pitch. Lange Brothers also beat Ukiah Sporting Goods 7-3 as Jeff Hauriljan and Bob Anderson sparked the late surge.
Billie Jean King defends her title as Americans and Australians lead first round action at Wimbledon. Mixed results include Pasarell defeating Santana in a high profile upset, while Richey Graebner and Freehling win their matches. Weather is fair with wind challenges noted.
Former Golden Gloves champion Dub Huntley of Los Angeles defeated Art Hernandez of Omaha in a 10 round unanimous decision at the Fight for Fame event in the Silver Slipper Ballroom. Huntley, 21, used sharp combinations to ahead while Hernandez tired in the late rounds during the benefit for the Las Vegas Boxing Hall of Fame.
Jim Ss shot a 36 hole 144 to place in the 14 15 year old division at the Central California Junior Championship. Frank Mixer of Fresno led with 138 while Nijmeier tied with Ss for second at 144 in a playoff Nijmeier won on the third extra hole.
In San Diego Cassius Clay and Archie Moore protected UPI reporter Harold Keen and cameraman Gilman during a hostile confrontation in Logan Heights. Keen said the pair calmed the crowd, shielded them from violence, and allowed a brief interview after rocks were tossed at their car. The incident followed a street gathering near Ocean View Park as Clay toured local mosques.
In Ukiah Valley Men's Softball League action at Giorno Park players showcase varied results from no-hitters to high scoring. Howie Jackson of Guild Wine tossed a no-hitter in a 12-0 win over Mendocino Savings and Saga, while Larry Wichplorr of Spanish Mountain TV delivered a 2-0 no-run gem against Masonite. Potter Valley, led by Ray Nelson, upset Spanish Mountain 4-2 then beat Masonite 11-8. Guild Wine crushed Thrasher Lumber 30-5 and beat Potter Valley 17-0. Thrasher edged Masonite 9-7 to stay out of the cellar. A showdown between Guild Wine and Spanish Mountain Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at Giorno Park looms as a possible first-round title decider.
