UCLA star Rafer Johnson is favored to win a Kingsburg invitational decathlon at Kingsburg High School Stadium. The 10 events begin tonight and end Tuesday, with Johnson aiming to reclaim the world standard of 7 985 points after Kuznetsov scored 8 013 last month. Al Weill Dropped From Patterson Harris Title Fight

Braves Opening Gap Grows On Chase For Yankees

United Press International reports the Milwaukee Braves widened their lead in the National League race with a 2-1 win over the San Francisco Giants, extending their margin behind the Yankees in the AL after a busy night of games. Warren Spahn pitched a three-hitter, Ed Mathews and Joe Adcock homered for Milwaukee while Felipe Alou homered for the fading Giants. The Dodgers swept Cincinnati in a doubleheader, Duke Snider hitting .323 with six hits, and Mantle, Lumpe, and Siebern homered for New York as Ryne Duren closed out a relief gem to preserve Bob Turley’s 10th win. The Cubs, Phillies, Pirates, and Reds also posted varied results as the pennant race tightens.
