Driver Escapes Serious Injury In Lumber Truck Crash
A lumber rig wheel separated from a following truck caused a spectacular crash at Forsythe Creek bridge two miles north of Calpella at 8 p.m. Tuesday. Los Angeles driver Robert Fleming, 31, was treated at Ukiah General Hospital for minor injuries after his loaded lumber truck and trailer plunged through the railing into the creek bed and caught fire. The trailer overturned on the bridge and blocked the highway for about three and a half hours. The accident followed a similar truck, driven by Joseph Allekna, 25, of Santa Rosa, whose right outside dual wheel failed, leading Fleming to lose control while behind him. Allekna continued to the hill crest thinking a flat tire. About 20 feet of bridge railing was torn out.

AFL Bakers Union Local 19 and Local 24 said the three week strike against 16 Bay Area bakeries is over and bread will be back on shelves by Saturday. The agreement reportedly includes hours cuts for several hundred workers without wage cuts and an 8.5 cent raise for those not affected by hours changes, below the union’s 12.5 cent demand. Bakers currently earn 2.31 dollars per hour.
