Two Killed? No. Truck Crash Leaves Dozens Hurt Near Ukiah
Seven loggers injured in a spectacular crash five miles east of Boonville on Ukiah Boonville Road. Victor LaVann, 53, driver of the panel truck, is in critical condition at Ukiah General Hospital after being struck by the vehicle. Vernon Lee Jones, 21, is listed on the critical list at Hillside Hospital. Five others sustain lesser injuries and are treated at Hillside or Ukiah General. The accident occurred when the truck apparently lost its left rear wheel, sending it end over end then overturning. The men were employees of Albert Elmer Logging Company en route to a logging area near Dimmick Park.

Oil Truck Crash Closes Highway 101 Near Leggery
A Douglas Oil truck driven by Paul Peterson, 26, of Oakland overturned on Highway 101 south of Leggery, blocking both directions for nearly three hours. Peterson suffered minor injuries as crews cleared oil and tar. by 5 a.m. single lane traffic was allowed and two-way traffic by 6 a.m. Bus service to Eureka was delayed.

Truck Fire After Ruptured Gas Line Near Ukiah
A heavy Wulfert Company truck with a boom and auger burned five miles south of Ukiah at 4 44 pm after a ruptured gas line dripping onto a hot exhaust pipe. Driver Edward Schwartz was digging a post hole when the accident occurred. Fire Chief Al Bechtel blamed the line for the blaze, with $10,000 damage. Also, a shed and two fences at 705 W Mill Street were destroyed by a morning incinerator fire owned by Wayne Welte. A grass fire on Babcock Lane produced no damage.
