CHP Warns Boat Owners on Towing Safety Rules

Captain Hays Hickey of the California Highway Patrol Ukiah Area warns boat owners who tow boats on public roads to ensure proper turn signals and safety devices. California requires trailers with loads 24 inches or more to have signal lamps or a compliant device, plus red tail lamp, license plate lamp, red reflector, and stop lamp. Newer trailers need two tail lamps and two stop lamps if first registered after January 1, 1958. Towing vehicles must have a mirror showing 200 feet behind, and hitches require secure mounting and a legal safety chain. The maximum towing speed is 45 miles per hour.
