President Carter, arriving at the White House from Camp David, rejected Pravda’s claim of a U.S. arms buildup and affirmed that his human rights policy remains independent and unaltered.
Variable cloudiness through Tuesday with coastal fog and local drizzle at night and in the morning. Scattered afternoon or evening thunderstorms possible over mountains today. Northerly winds up to 30 mph along the coast. Inland areas turning warmer with daylight highs mid nineties around Ukiah and inland valleys. Fort Bragg readings 62 to 65 and 52 to 60.
The Ukiah Unified board approved a tentative 1977 78 budget of 9 494 000 and set July 12 at 4 p m to open second bids for Ukiah Middle School construction. Final budget approval awaits county review public hearing and August actions. Potter Valley dissolves from Ukiah Unified July 1 and will operate separately.
A two year old named Allan Callaway perished in a Mendocino mobile home fire at 6 45 am on Saturday. Firefighters battled the blaze as the sheriff investigates and no foul play is suspected. Funeral arrangements are at Cain Grove Haverfield.
Two local pediatricians Dr Paul Seward and Dr Sidney Maurer Jr resign from Mendocino Community Hospital staff urging immediate closure of obstetrical services. They cite substandard perinatal care and inadequate facilities and advocate transferring current patients to Ukiah General Hospital or other community services. The move follows Dr Richard Drury and board deliberations and amid a county wide debate over keeping the facility open.
A Friday Ukiah meeting heard a Teen Center request of 18 744 for staff and programs as council plans budget priorities. Officials must choose a site for a proposed second fire station by Tuesday and review federal cost and location plans.
The Nation reports two gunmen fired on Ugandan President Idi Amin during the weekend. Amin has disappeared. Kampala roadblocks are in place and Ugandan officials say they do not know his location. Police hunt continues as troops and police mobilize around Entebbe and Kampala.
