Be's dazzled with a 2 2 victory over Borgna as Lynch struck out 14 in a 22 standoff. Dave Brown and Jerry McGarn sparked late offense with triples, while Pat Finnegan scored twice in a first inning walk and error sequence. In the nightcap Hollow Tree fell 10-3 as Casteel’s squad built early lead behind Doug Modrell’s four hit pitching.

Weill plea and check delayed by California boxing board

Sacramento Calif UPI reports Weill plans for a heavyweight title bout promotion were postponed as the California Boxing Commission delays a decision on his promoter license. Commissioner Dan O Urrey said investigations would not be complete until after the weekend. Weill consults his attorney Wells and awaits the commission’s report.

Bolt Rockets to Early Buick Open Lead at Warwick Hills

U S Open champion Tommy Bolt led the Buick Open with a three under par 69 as he capitalized on the first round. Bolt's 69 put him one stroke ahead of Bill Casper Jr while George Bayer Doug Sanders Ted Kroll Gene Littler and Tom Nieporte followed at 71. Arnold Palmer struggled with four bogeys in nine holes while Sam Snead ended 78. A rain delay threatened better conditions for the second round.

Sub-four-minute milers boost entry list at meet

The entry list swelled with noted milers including Merv Lincoln Herb Elliott Lazslo Tabori and Don Bowden. Meet Director J B Haralson said preliminaries would be required as the strong field kept growing. He noted four-minute milers did not scare entrants and emphasized competing against the best.

Dolphins Begin Workouts for Ukiah Swim Club Season

The Ukiah Dolphins invite boys and girls aged 6 to 16 to join summer workouts beginning next week. The club seeks depth in the 12 to 16 group as it plans about 15 meets at various locales including San Jose, Red Bluff, Sebastopol, Napa, and Santa Rosa with possible Oroville and Willows appearances. Regular practice times are 10 to 11 a.m. for ages 12 and under and 5 to 6 p.m. for ages 13 to 16 and stronger 11 to 12 year olds, daily Monday through Friday, with contact Coach George Wildberger at the pool to join.

Ukiah Women Softball Team Opens Season in Ft Bragg

The Ukiah women's softball team begins its season Sunday with an out of town game against the Mendocino County champions from Ft Bragg at Ft Bragg. Kickoff is 3 15 p.m. Players expected to start include Louise Lampson Sandy Mauer Barbara Hallman Gaye Smith Elsie Prost Cindy Clem Linda Johnson Sharleen Thorton and Dottle Dale. Other possible trip players include Irene Phillips and Karren Cidell. Flight from Giorno Park departs 1 15 p.m. and transport will be arranged for all women and girls who practiced with the squads.

Famed Jockey Jack Westrope Dies After Race Spill

In Inglewood California jockey Jack Westrope died from injuries after a spill in the seventh race at Hollywood Oaks Well Away bolted to the rail near the wire causing Westrope to be thrown He was 40 and had 301 career wins by age 15 His parents were at Centinela Hospital when he died of multiple fractures and internal injuries.

Pony Benefit Dance Aids Ukiah Baseball Leagues

Rod Pacini’s seven piece dance orchestra will play tomorrow night at the Ukiah Grange hall from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. to raise funds for Pony League and Pony-Grad League baseball for boys aged 13 to 16. A queen will be crowned during the event, with candidates named including Nancy Davis and others. The evening features Pacini’s popular band with Gloria Pidgeon on piano and notable players, sponsored by the Pony leagues with support from the Baseball Mother’s Club and Ukiah Exchange club. Admission is 1.00 per person. The pheasant wing remark appears as an unrelated note in the text.

USC Wins in 12th for NCAA Crown

USC clinched the NCAA baseball title in 12 innings, beating Missouri 8 to 7. Mike Blewett delivered the series winner scoring Don Biasotti as Southern California earned its second straight win over Missouri and Bill Thom was named the series MVP.

Car Club Holds Public Car Wash For Jackets

The Stockers Car Club of Ukiah will host a car wash tomorrow from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Ford's Mobilgas on State and Mill streets to raise funds for jackets. Cars will be washed for 1.50 by youths interested in car care and upkeep.
