BEA Trident jetliner lost power and crashed after takeoff from London Heathrow. All 118 aboard died, including 35 Americans, marking Britain's worst aviation disaster.
A Mendocino County proposal to form an inland corridor community college district, including Anderson Valley Ukiah Willits Round Valley, receives a do pass recommendation from the California Community Colleges chancellor. The board of governors will review in San Bruno Wednesday and Thursday.
Ukiah Fire Department and California Division of Forestry joined forces Saturday to suppress a stubborn brush fire on Mill Creek Road in Mendocino State Hospital property. The blaze, visible across the Ukiah Valley, drew mutual aid from Ukiah crews and state firefighters. On Sunday, Ukiah firemen responded to an 8:30 p.m. illegal burn on the Zaina property at 3300 S State Street.

Board of Supervisors approves nine additional personnel for Mendocino Community Hospital mental health in-patient clinic set to open around July 1 with 18 beds. Facility will treat emotionally disturbed and provide detox programs for county residents moving from Mendocino State Hospital. State funds cover 90 percent of operating costs. county covers 10 percent.
Over the weekend motorists faced several injuries from accidents in the Ukiah area. Gerald Blank, 56, Redwood Valley, lost control when a power steering hose snapped on N State Street near Western Hills Trailer Park and overturned. Serafin Vaca, 25, Hopland, sparked a three car crash on Marina Drive near Eastside Road Calpella, injuring Virginia Vaca. Wayne Robison, 44, Santa Rosa, damaged county fencing on Eastside Road near Eel River Road and sought medical care. Minor injuries were reported for Mildred Goforth and others in the chain reaction collision. Authorities warned car owners with power steering to inspect hoses.
Washington DC congressman Don Clausen announces Shellmaker Inc of San Francisco won a 198 750 contract to dredge the main channel of Noyo River in Mendocino County coast. The bid was reopened after initial bids exceeded government estimates. Noyo Harbor serves fishing, pleasure craft and Coast Guard moorage between San Francisco and the Oregon border.
