Turkey threatens to close U S bases over embargo

Ankara demanded renegotiation of the 25 U S military bases in Turkey after Congress imposed an arms embargo over Turkey's Cyprus invasion. Turkish officials warned that if the embargo is not lifted by July 15, Turkey would close the bases, including Black Sea radar and intelligence sites opposite the Soviet coast. The move follows a 41 40 Senate vote to lift the embargo with no House action.

Ford backs Rockefeller for VP amid open convention ambiguity

President Ford plans to support Nelson Rockefeller for the 1976 vice presidency but leaves the final choice to GOP delegates. A prepared White House statement says Ford will be for the nomination, yet delegates will decide, avoiding a clear open-convention stance. Ford and Rockefeller aim to win delegates as a team. No major push to dump Rockefeller exists.

Buckaroo Days Crowned Queen Melissa Johnson at Boonville

Melissa Johnson daughter of Mr and Mrs C M Johnson of Ukiah was crowned Buckaroo Days queen Saturday at Boonville Fairgrounds. She reigned Sunday over the Buckaroo Days rodeo and gymkhana after being judged on appearance personality and horsemanship by four judges. The luncheon and ceremonies at Mendocino County Fair dining room preceded the crowning with awards from Mrs Bobbie Hiatt Ernie Pardini and the BoPeeps auxiliary.

Fort Bragg July Fourth fireworks to light up coast

Fort Bragg hosts a coast wide Fourth of July fireworks display funded entirely by private donations. The show, launched from Georgia Pacific property near Noyo Harbor, will be visible along the coast with no admission charged. Residents are urged to donate at the Chamber of Commerce office or by mail to support future events.

Castro to return skyjack ransom to United States

UPI reports Cuba will hand $2 million in ransom from 1972 air piracy to Southern Airways as part of opening talks with Washington on normalizing ties. The decision follows the detention of four Americans charged with hijacking and in U.S. custody, with U.S. officials calling the move a positive step amid long-standing sanctions and a shifting bilateral agenda. Suspect in local kidnapping shot by Cloverdale officer

A suspect in an armed robbery and kidnapping at Shop-N-Save in Cloverdale lies seriously wounded in Community Hospital Santa Rosa after a police shooting. David Hammam, 26, was shot in the chest by a Cloverdale officer as he attempted to rob the market. Another suspect, Anthony Nelson, 33, of Concord, is jailed on robbery, kidnapping and assault charges.

Debt ceiling hike rejected by House vote

The House rejected a large increase in the national debt ceiling as Ways and Means must draft a new plan before June 30. Rep. James Burke proposed trimming the figure to 599.99 billion, but the bill failed 225 to 175. The current ceiling stands at 53 billion.

Communists gain in Italy regional elections roil government

Italy's Communist party surged to about one third of the vote in regional elections, surpassing forecasts and threatening a crisis for Premier Aldo Moro's Christian Democratic government. The Christian Democrats slipped to roughly 35 percent as the Communists celebrated in Rome with rallies and demonstrations.

Four murder suspects in Willits slaying get court appointed attorneys

Four suspects in the slaying of Barbara Stroud, 18, of Willits, were in Superior Court for appointment of counsel after the Mendocino County Grand Jury indicted them on charges of kidnap, rape and murder. A fifth suspect has retained counsel. The murder occurred Jan 8, 1973, after Stroud left the Willits Theater. her body was found two days later along Show Road. Witness Phillip Wood, 24, of Willits, testified under sodium pentathol that he would testify, though he may invoke the Fifth Amendment. The Grand Jury proceedings remain secret.
