Ukiah Varsity Baseball Caps unbeaten season with honors

Ukiah High School’s Varsity baseball team capped an 15 game unbeaten run with celebration honors and gold baseballs from the Block U Society. Starters Carl Johnson and Fuzzy Moulder led a strong lineup. Johnson hit .480 with 24 hits, 5 triples and 2 homers, while Moulder nearly hit .400 before turning pro with the Giants in Hastings Nebraska.

O'Brien Sets New World Record of 63 Feet 8 Inches

Parry O'Brien set a world shot put record of 63 feet 8 inches at a rare meet in Pomona with only 65 spectators. Officials said the throw qualifies as a national record, surpassing his prior best by six inches. Dal las Long and USC were absent. Long had earlier tied and then bettered the mark, but his later 63 feet 7 inches was not recognized due to a rule dispute on attempts.

Besmanoff Happy Over Upset Win

Billy Besmanoff the beetle browed German immigrant to Milwaukee scored a heavy weight unanimous decision over Mike de John of Syracuse in 10 rounds. Besmanoff built an early commanding lead and fought back when De John opened up late, evening the score after last November in New York.

Akins Seeks End to Boxing Slump vs Rodriguez

Virgil Akins, former titleholder and one punch slugger, faces rising Luis Manuel Rodriguez in a nationally televised 10 round bout in Miami Beach. Akins has lost three of his last four, listed as a 7-5 favorite though odds favor a decision unlikely and anything could happen as the veteran meets the 22 year old challenger.

Special Little League Program Set for Tonight

Tonight at Giorno Park a double header features Anton Jets versus Service Clubs in the 6 p.m. opener and Lions Clube against Potter Valley Pine Browns in the second game. Pressing Attack Wins Ring Bout

Seventh ranked middleweight Joey Giardello credited a press hve attack campaign for a first round kayo of veteran Del Flanagan in a ten round scheduled bout in St. Paul Minnesota. A crowd of 4802 watched as Giardello blitzed Flanagan at the opening bell and finished with a body assault and a hard right hook to the left ear. Flanagan remained on the canvas until the count of eight.

Dempsey Ponders Johansson as Sweden’s Fighter Stays Cautious

In New York Dempsey comments on Ingemar Johansson while the Swede sparred seven rounds without a knockdown. Promoter Rosensohn and TV boss Kahn hope for a $100,000 gate and a June 25 bout setup as Johansson nears a World Heavyweight title challenge against Floyd Patterson. Johansson, 198 pounds, is famed for a dangerous right but has yet to land a knockdown in 151 sparring rounds.

State Commission to Rule on Bloody Lightweight Bout

In Sacramento the State Athletic Commission prepared to decide the Lopes versus Salas fight after Salas could not answer the bell for the 10th round. Referee stopped the bout, Lopes considered winning, Salas claimed a foul. A decision was expected as a TKO or no contest with Lopes favored on points. Salas weighed 155 pounds to Lopes 183.
