Maloney Tosses Fast Ball To Tie Club Strikeout Record

Lew Lewis belted his eighth homer as Cincinnati edge Chicago 2-0 while Maloney struck out 21 in a 16 inning game against Baltimore. The Mets starter matched a club record with 21 strikeouts, and Jackson paced Chicago to a 2-0 win over Houston. Other NL action saw St Louis beat Pittsburgh 5-2, and Cleveland edged New York 4-1 in the AL.

Guild Wines Opens Ukiah Softball Season At Giorno Park

Guild Wines will host Masonite tonight at Giorno Park at 7 p.m. as the Ukiah Valley Men's Softball League starts its 1965 season. The 9 p.m. game features El n Lou's Roost vs Ukiah Electric Laundry. Managers are Dennis Lucchesi Guild Wines Ray Whetstone Masonite and Herm Washington Laundry. Tom Piver is chief umpire. the league begins a double round robin through July with playoffs possible.

Maloney’s no hitter ends in 1-0 loss to Mets

Cincinnati pitcher Jim Maloney fired a 10 inning no hitter only to lose 1-0 as John Lewis hit a seventh inning home run for New York. Maloney struck out 18, tying the NL record, and joined Haddix and Johnson in the history books for a no hitter loss.

Anton Stadium Pony League opener ends with one-run Crawford loss

In Anton Stadium the Ua VFW edged Crawford's by one run in a tense first Pony League game. UCLA Track Acc Vioted Athlete of the Year

UCLA's Bob Day, holder of two national intercollegiate records, was voted athlete of the year by the Southern California Track Writers and Coaches Association. Day ran a 3 56.4 mile at Bakersfield for the USTF championships and also holds the college two mile mark of 8 54. Don Shy of Mt. San Antonio College finished third in the SPAAU decathlon and was named most valuable performer to his team. John Debroth of the Striders, with a 7 feet inch high jump, was voted most improved athlete.

Colt Leaguers Open Play Tenite In Anton Games

Colt Leaguers start play tonight at 6 30 in Anton Stadium with Lakeport’s Lange Brothers joining Ukiah Sporting Goods Masonite and Pleasant View Dairy sponsored teams in a summer league for boys age 15 and 16. Opening games feature Masonite versus Sporting Goods and Lange Brothers versus Pleasant View with games on Tuesdays and Thursdays plus special fund raising events including a tentative Merchants game on June 26.

Nicklaus Opens Favorite At Bellerive For U S Open

George Washington slept little while Jack Nicklaus stayed on the Bellerive course for 10 days of prep. The 25-year-old was 8 to 1 odds to win his second Open as Billy Casper said the course seems built for Nicklaus and rain could boost his chances. Casper noted Nicklaus can reach the par fives in two, a feat others struggle to approach.
