Ukiah trustees seek 89 cent tax hike for district budget

Trustees voted to place a September 20 special election question before voters to raise the Ukiah Unified school tax rate by 89 cents to 3.75 per 100 of assessed valuation over five years. The move accompanies a tentative 1966 67 budget of 3,224,990 showing a deficit without tax increase funds to cover living cost increases for teachers and non certificated staff. River school will operate next year with about 162 pupils, part of the district deficit plan. A petition from River area residents urged keeping the school open, while taxpayers from the former River Union noted long operation and proximity benefits. The board stressed River school closure was only a budget economy suggestion to support proposed salary and cost of living increases.
