The event highlights a two tier race day with 16 point leader Guartermidgets and Cindy Leask at 13 points, Scott Leask at 12, and Ed Sieele along with Ricky Feigin among top contenders as season trophies approach.
The Ukiah Valley Long-Distance Running Association held its first meeting with Ken Anderson as president. About a dozen enthusiasts plan twilight and other medium distance races this summer on handicap bases, open to all ages. Stan Stafford directs, Alan Johnson is VP, Tom Berg secretary treasurer, with sessions starting June 21 on a two mile course at Vichy Springs road. The aim is fitness and promoting cross country running for the public.
Ukiah High celebrated the end of spring athletics with varsity B and jayvee awards for track baseball and golf. Notable winners include Dave Aho Ken ny Anderson Tony Chess Bill Hook Ron Mattson James Miller Myron Remington Bob Ryder Noel Stoughton Barry Turner Rob Warner and many more across track baseball and golf. Special honors went to Bill Hook state discus champion and Ralph Maize for no hit no run pitching and dependable performance.
Civil Air Patrol Ukiah Squadron 28 met at the Army Reserve Armory with Lt. Bin Cox presiding. Guests included Ukiah Air Force Reserve, films on civilian flying safety were shown, and planning began for a CAP Fly-in Breakfast at the airport on Aug HM. Emergency first aid course discussed. CAP meetings shift to the 2nd and 4th Fridays from June 27.
The right handed pitcher Hank Borowy rose to prominence with the Yankees in 1942 and helped the Cubs reach the World Series after a midseason 1945 sale for 100000 dollars. He later played for Detroit in 1951 finishing with a 22- record. Now 42, Borowy works in Teal real estate in Paloma, New Jersey, while still involved in baseball as a batting practice pitcher for a season.
Local fishermen expect better fishing as sun returns and winds ease. Lake Pillsbury and Blue Lake offer good angling despite rain, but high water kept Eel River steelhead scarce. Coast fishing remained light with a few surf fishermen at Alder Creek and Howard Creek. salmon runs were nearly absent.
Ralph and Evan Oakley, co owners of Ukiah Feed Store at 75 N State Street, and Roger Gilman, since Ree Battery Supply Ltd opened, form a Ukiah Feed Store subsidiary for west coast distribution of silicon waterless batteries. A demonstration is set for Thursday June 19 at 2 p.m. at the Ukiah Feed Store.
Los Angeles officials announced Tuesday night that 18 year old high school pitching star Mike Thornton signed to a bonus contract with the Dodgers. The 6 foot 3 inch left hander from Hawthorne weighed 195 pounds and will report to Reno in the California League after signing a Montreal contract.
A Colusa County resident, aged 98, holds the age record among California Old Age Security recipients who have applied for free fishing licenses. Lawrence O Leary of the Department of Fish and Game notes more than 7,200 such licenses, with this year's stamps, issued in 1958. Eligible are aid to the aged recipients. applications with eligibility proof go to department headquarters in Sacramento.
Los Angeles UPI says Al Weill appears before the California Athletic Commission on Saturday to obtain a license to promote a world heavyweight title bout this summer at Memorial Coliseum or Wrigley Field. Weill does not expect trouble with the panel.
