The Mendocino State Hospital dairy herd of 311 prize Holsteins was auctioned Saturday, producing $202385 total with an average of 650 per cow. One cow remains, calving soon, while Marshall Christenson paid 2650 for the top bid.
David Allen Weaver 42 of Albion poured gasoline on his clothing and set himself afire at his Albion Ridge home late Friday. Deputies and firefighters found a charred body. notes in his car and a prior assault arrest link him to the incident. Dental comparisons pending identification.
Washington bulletin reports the Senate Finance Committee voting today on how to fund a 10 percent boost in Social Security benefits by increasing payroll taxes.

More than two thousand people attended the dedication in Willits as Mendocino County’s 16th county museum opened. Judge Timothy O’Brien opened the ceremony with flags, and Kathy Svendsen unlocked the building as Miss Mendocino County. Local officials, advisory board members, and donors were acknowledged, and a square dance and open house followed with displays including an authentic spinning wheel. Denny and Gianoli Construction sue Ukiah officials including Clerk Hattie Tillotson for 3651 damages claiming the city overpaid 2140 for 14 hangers at the municipal airport by accepting Brady and Crane’s 25160 bid instead of D&G’s 23089. They allege state and local code required awarding to the lowest bidder on projects over 3500 and 2000 respectively. The claim was filed March 24 1972 after the city rejected their earlier bid claim.
Search crews using dogs worked through the night to recover bodies from Rapid City and surrounding areas after a dam burst unleashed a four foot wall of water. Authorities said death toll surpassed 200 with officials warning the count could rise.
Officials investigate a fatal auto wreck four miles east of Highway 101 near Bell Springs Road. William Carry, 76, of San Anselmo was found dead in his wrecked car, with next of kin Ruth believed living in San Anselmo. Margaret Murphy led Ukiah High School’s 1972 graduation with a 4.0 average and was named valedictorian. Salutatorians included Stacia Eriksen Karen Forsberg Raymond Kruth Roberta Rempert and Henri Valette. New scholarships announced honored former principals and local figures with Dana Miller Genevieve McKeon Mark Valentini and others among the recipients.
