West Germany eyes Oder Neisse border in thaw bid
In 1968 West German leader Brandt broke a taboo by acknowledging the Oder Neisse line as Poland's eastern border. Polish leader Gomulka offered to sign a treaty recognizing it, hoping to ease tensions and spur West German support ahead of elections. Both sides hedged terms, linking recognition to German reunification and nonproliferation, while Poland faced economic strain and critiques of its goods and currency gap. France alone among Western allies recognizes the line as permanent, and a settlement could defuse a European time bomb.
