Deep Valley School wins JC parade sweepstakes

Deep Valley Christian School in Redwood Valley won the Ukiah Jaycees parade sweepstakes with the Brothers in Christ theme. Armijo High and Ukiah groups claimed band and float prizes as Festival 73 rodeo drew crowds and highlight shows featuring Ricki Dunn and a rodeo queen pageant.

Armijo Band Dominates Fiesta Festival Parade Honors

Armijo high school band led by a drum major won the sweepstakes trophy for the second straight year at the Ukiah Fiesta Festival band review. Fairfield high joined as a strong rival as Armijo earned top marching scores with a 93.95 and claimed the best drum major award.

Woman charged in slaying on Laytonville Rancheria

A Hopland woman faces murder charges after a 7 a.m. shooting on the Laytonville Rancheria. Vernita Knight allegedly fired a .22 rifle at Warner Rudolph Potter, who died at Howard Memorial Hospital. Knight is jailed. Potter is named male victim. investigation ongoing.

Prominent Covelo man dies in car crash

Walter Winters age 69 a Covelo rancher and longtime fraternal and church figure died at Hillside Community Hospital after a car driven by his wife drifted on Highway 101 near the Sonoma County line and struck an embankment. Dallas Winters 62 suffered injuries. Funeral Wednesday at Covelo Masonic Temple. Burial in Covelo cemetery. He had lived in Round Valley 45 years and held Masonic and Eastern Star offices.

Mathers gets suspended jail time and probation

Former Ukiah police officer Roy Irvin Mathers, 36, resigned after a freeway collision April 18, was given one year in county jail with the term suspended and placed on 24 months probation, plus a $500 fine. He pled no contest to a felony. probation requires no alcohol, monthly reports, and license suspension potential. four injured occupants sued for over $9 million.

Tanker torch blast kills Upper Lake man at mill

Donald Wallace Philbrook 47 of Upper Lake died Sunday afternoon when an acetylene torch ignited gas fumes in a compartment of an old water tanker at the Upper Lake lumber mill where he was working on modifications. He was the mill owner Elvin Philbrook’s son.
