California gas tax bill moves toward governor action

Gov. Edmund G Brown is one vote from possible endorsement of a bill raising California's gasoline tax from 6 to 7 cents per gallon. The assembly approved the measure 60 to 13 with amendments allowing counties to levy an additional 25 percent auto tax for rapid transit, to be collected by the state and redistributed locally. The bill, already Senate-passed, would net over $100 million yearly for streets and roads, plus up to $38 million for rapid transit if fully utilized, with costs to motorists roughly $7 annually for the gas tax and $4 yearly for vehicle registration on an $800 car. The measure awaits Senate action and Brown's final decision.
