Ukiah Jaycees Festival Parade Winners Honor Local Entries
Ukiah Elks Lodge float won the sweepstakes amid 20 plus entries in the Ukiah Jaycees festival parade. Deep Valley Christian School led non-commercial winners, with Redwood Valley Junior Grange and Ukiah Business and Professional Women's Club also placing. Commercial top went to Round Table Pizza, Bank of America second. Last Chance Saloon led novelty, followed by Redwood Empire Lions. The event featured 28 school bands, extreme heat, and large crowds. Trophies honored for best pumpers, Smokey the Bear and California Forestry, plus vintage and classic autos. Mounted groups and color guard dominated with multiple trophy awards, while Sheriff Tom Jondahl presided as parade marshal.

Three car crash kills two Oakland men near Middletown
On Highway 29 four miles south of Middletown two Oakland men died in a three car collision at 7 p.m. Richmond Thrower, 59, and passenger Henry Lee Johnson, 69, were killed. Injured were Chestene Miller, 44, and Susie Richmond, 63, both of Oakland. Drivers Horace Douglas Lee of Livermore and Frank Hinds of Vallejo were treated at Redbud Hospital. Arrangements are pending at Jones and Lewis Mortuary in Lower Lake.
