Supreme Court rules civilian trial for off base serviceman crimes
The Supreme Court ruled 5-3 that servicemen who commit non military off base crimes in peacetime must be tried in civilian courts. The decision limits military jurisdiction over offenses such as murder and rape. The ruling affects about 85 percent of such cases now tried in civilian courts and clarifies that peacetime off base offenses fall under civilian jurisdiction unless service connected.
