Carter proposes Consumer Protection Agency to give voice to quiet buyers

President Carter asks Congress to form a small Agency for Consumer Protection to balance influence with big business. He tells 200 supporters the agency would be nonauthoritative, merely a forum for the quiet and unorganized to be heard, not a power seizure.

Hanafi murder trial jurors face sequestered summer

About 425 prospective jurors were told by Superior Court Judge Nicholas Nunzio that those chosen to try 12 Hanafi Muslims on murder and kidnapping charges may be kept sequestered most of the summer. The defendants including Hammas Abdul Khaalis sat with lawyers as jurors filled questionnaires fed into a computer. In Los Angeles a SWAT siege continued as Howard Lee McDowell hostage situation persisted in a hotel bathroom with police outside and the Rev. James McDowell opposing surrender efforts.

Mendocino Board Cuts Youth Project Funding Fight

Mendocino County supervisors tentatively rejected a 29000 revenue sharing request for the Mendocino County Youth Project, risking closure of branches in Ukiah Fort Bragg Willits Point Arena and Boonville. Project director David Patton warned a funding loss could total about 60000 and jeopardize 16 staff across five offices.

Vinson death probe may widen under sheriff oversight

Undersheriff Jack Wilson said the sheriff's office may expand its inquiry into the May 28 death of 28 year old Jimmy S. Vinson in Redwood Valley. Vinson was found dead in his living room from an apparent drug overdose and an autopsy is pending final results.
