UPI reports California Senator Clair Engle dies in Washington after a lengthy illness from a brain tumor. The 52 year old Democrat who served 21 years in Congress announced retirement in April after a 1963 operation left him paralyzed on the right side. Engle had earlier fought to stay in the Senate, even voting from a hospital bed during the civil rights filibuster. He began his career in the House in 1943, moving to the Senate in 1958.

Al Thrasher owner of Thrash er Lumber Co Calpella said a new steel mill under construction will be operating within 60 days. The Thrasher sawmill was destroyed by fire on Sunday June 28. The new mill will cost about 300000, with nearly half of the 113 employees idled by the blaze now working on the project. A new office and machine shop have just been completed.

Women Injured In Highway 101 Mishap Near Ukiah
Two Calistoga women were injured when their car skidded broadside on Highway 101 ten miles south of Ukiah. The vehicle ran off the road, fell 25 feet down a steep bank, rolled, and rested on its wheels. Driver Mabel White Graham, 76, was thrown from the car with possible back fracture and was moved to Santa Rosa hospital. Passenger Marie Z Knust, 70, stayed in the car and suffered head injuries, confined to Hillside Hospital.

Blaze At Hollow Tree Causes Heavy Fire Damage
Ukiah firefighters fought a blaze that started in the sub flooring of the Hollow Tree Lumber sales office at the east end of Hollow Tree. The fire broke out at 6 15 p m and caused heavy damage to the floor and sub-flooring while investigators from Fire Chief Al Bechtel and the sheriff's department probe the cause. Division of Forestry crews also battled an 8 acre brush and timber fire near Boonville Road earlier and dispatched units to the Vichy Dump to extinguish a separate blaze.

Senate backs compromise plan on Social Security expansion
