Cox Confident Nixon Will Surrender Tape Recordings

Special Prosecutor Archibald Cox said he is confident President Nixon will surrender White House tape recordings if the Supreme Court orders it. He emphasized the court would decide the issue and called the tapes highly relevant to Nixon’s possible involvement and potential perjury.

Skylab mission on schedule for 59 day space stay

Skylab astronauts Navy Capt. Alan Bean civilian scientist Owen Garriott and Marine Maj. Jack Lousma spent a rest day at Cape Kennedy before a 7:11 a.m. EDT Saturday launch. The two month plus stay will extend research into living in space following the first crew’s 28 days.

Navarro blaze containment amid 200 acre fire threat

Firefighters containment line around a 200 acre grass and timber fire near Navarro held at 9 a.m. as air and ground units surged to the scene. A California Division of Forestry plane spotted the blaze at 2:45 p.m. and, despite rapid spread to the southeast, helped bring 34 pieces of equipment and 10 conservation crews to control.

Transformer shuts down and darkens Ukiah area

More than 1,000 homes in the west Ukiah area lost power for about 40 minutes after a transformer overheated and oil boiled over on Eastlick Street south of Clay. Service to most City of Ukiah customers was restored by 9 40 p m, with a few homes dark until near midnight. The outage hit about 25 percent of users, affecting Gobbi Dora and Spring Streets, Empire Gardens and high school zones and extending to Mendocino Drive. Some Clay area homes remained powered while others did not.

Heat Wave Ties Record as Ukiah Hits 110

Yesterday was the hottest day of the year with Ukiah at 110 and Palm Springs at 113. A cold front moving in promises temperatures dropping by up to 25 degrees in northern California, with Ukiah forecast to 88 today and nights remaining around 60s.

Former Ukiah Mayor Mazzoni Dies After Heart Attack

Richard F. Mazzoni, 72, longtime Ukiah resident and former city council member including a mayoral term, died at a Ukiah hospital after a heart seizure. Survived by wife Leona and six siblings, services set for Monday at 2 p.m. at Eversole Mortuary with Ukiah Cemetery burial.

Masonite and Union sign three year contract agreement

Masonite workers in Local 980 approved a three year contract by 138 to 97 after a narrowly amended proposal. The deal grants across the board raises of 22, 21, and 24 cents per hour over three years, higher dental and major medical coverage, pension boosts, and a two cent shift differential. Union officials led by Joe Mitchell and Charles Green, with Masonite negotiators, concluded the deal after a 10 day cooling off period.

Timber committee to hold Aug 11 hearing in Fort Bragg

California Assembly Select Committee on North Coast Timber Economy will hold a public hearing August 11 at 9 30 a m in Veterans Auditorium Fort Bragg. The six member panel chaired by Barry Keene probes accelerated Mendocino County logging and its effect on jobs and tax revenue with air and site inspections planned the day before the hearing.

Colt League All Stars seek homes for regional tournament

Ukiah hosts the Northern Region Colt League championships with about 45 visiting players from Oregon Washington Idaho Montana Nevada Utah and California. Clearlake Park Man Accused After Knife Attack on Son and Officers

A 29-year-old man, Jerry Edward Lontayo of Clearlake Park, is in custody after allegedly attacking his son with two kitchen knives and injuring Deputy Greg Berry in a pursuit at his home. Lontayo reportedly threw a knife at the officer. both deputies subdued him, and the son required stitches. No other children were injured.
