Court rules Nixon must surrender tapes in Watergate case

The Supreme Court ruled unanimously that President Nixon must surrender subpoenaed Watergate tapes and records to Special Prosecutor Leon Jaworski for use in the trial of six former aides and potentially in impeachment proceedings. Chief Justice Burger said presidential privilege yields to the criminal trial need, ordering 64 conversations turned over to Judge Sirica for relevance.

Court rules against absolute presidential immunity in evidence case

The court rejects unqualified presidential privilege, saying executive privilege must yield to due process. It calls time of essence for the mandate and upholds limited secrecy while preserving the separation of powers and the rule of law in the criminal justice aim to prevent guilt from escaping or innocence suffering.

Rex Eiffert Named River School Principal by Ukiah Board

Rex Eiffert, 34, a specialist in minority programs and a counselor, was named the new principal of River school by the Ukiah Unified board after a parent-backed selection committee recommended him. He replaces Robert Hayden, who will lead Oak Manor school full time, and Eiffert plans to devote most time to River while handling some public relations duties. The board also appointed Wallace Bralich as 1974 75 Yokayo principal, and reviewed schematic plans for a new Ukiah campus on Low Gap Road, with adjustments needed for an auditorium, band room, tennis courts and parking. They authorized seeking a condemnation hearing for the high school site while negotiating selling prices.

Rehab center contract awarded to SR construction company

Todd Construction Co of Santa Rosa won the 1.3 million rehabilitation center project on Low Gap Road for Mendocino County. Bid details show base 1.142 million with 1.30625 million including nine alternates. other bids were 1.2 million and 1.29 million. County plans housing for 96 misdemeanor offenders with future max security expansion.

Publishers reach fair statement compromise

Six Mendocino County publishers may unite to publish the fair statement through the Ukiah Daily Journal year round, with copy ready form supplied to weekly papers at a reduced rate. The board urged timely presentation as budget hearings approach and left details to the publishers.

Final county budget hearings open Monday

County supervisors begin final budget hearings Monday after two days of work sessions on department budgets. The tentative basic budget was 20.5 million with 2.43 million revenue sharing bringing total to 22.99 million, plus an additional 5 million for storm damage road work contingent on reimbursements, overall nearly 28 million. Public hearings run department by department from 10 a.m. to Aug. 7, with final adoption slated for Aug. 27.

County approves outdoor festival regulation ordinance

County supervisors passed a new ordinance regulating outdoor festivals defined as gatherings over 1,000 with primary theatrical or musical draws on private property. The measure requires attendance estimates to be submitted to the sheriff and health department for comment and allows permit revocation for law violations. violations are misdemeanors up to $500 fine or 90 days in jail.
