A blaze at Hollow Tree log deck, near the Masonite plant, burned about 25 percent of the structure and up to 300000 dollars in losses. Fire Chief Al Bechtel said 40 million board feet were on site and heavy winds hindered hose access as crews fought the four hour blaze.
Bechtel reported sparks from a deck fire blown by a northwesterly wind across the platform. No danger to Masonite’s plant as sparks blew toward the river. More than 100 men fought the blaze as two air tankers spread di ammonium phosphate to cool the deck before logs could be dragged apart. Fire Belles aided with coffee and sandwiches. Authorities from Ukiah to Willits provided ground support.
Dallas report says Jack Ruby told FBI polygraph examiners he decided the morning of November 24 to kill Lee Harvey Oswald. He stated he acted to spare Mrs. Kennedy distress and denied prior knowledge of Oswald or involvement in a conspiracy.
William Conley Junior of Ukiah was indicted by a grand jury for two counts of murder in the double killing of Clifton and Elaine McCool outside their cabin. He was arraigned in Superior Court after an earlier Justice Court arraignment and will plead to the indictment with a trial date to be set within 60 days.
Vie Nam air force commander Ky disclosed that Low Viet Nam is training for a special mission including attack, support and paradrop actions directed at North Viet Nam and beyond. He urged air attacks against China to aid Viet Cong victory as U.S. officers pilot Vietnamese planes in combat.
Rioting and looting raged across Harlem and Bedford-Stuyvesant as police battled crowds. Fears of Communist incitement accompanied a wave that left stores damaged and hundreds detained or injured. Authorities bolstered patrols and federal agents joined the inquiry into who organized the violence.
In Washington, Senate GOP Leader Everett Dirksen urged moderates to temper the party revolt against Barry Goldwater. He predicted holdouts would come to the milk pan and said Goldwater would seek conciliatory moves after talks with Eisenhower. New York Sens Keating and Javits renewed objections as Beall and Meek Keldin of Maryland withheld support until civil rights and extremism are clarified.
Northwestern California forecast calls for mostly fair today and tonight with increasing coastal fog and low clouds. Light rain possible from Eureka northward Thursday, otherwise little temperature change. highs around 90s and lows in the 50s. Coastal winds NW 12 to 25 knots, southerly 12 to 22 knots Fort Bragg northward Thursday.
