Gas squeeze hits county vehicle fleet

County supervisors face higher fuel costs as gas prices rise and supplies tighten. County Administrator Al Beltrami says the county can no longer use state price benefits and now pays market rates. Fuel is allocated by last year’s monthly average with new vehicles on the way. Chairman Augie Avila urges cutting back home use of county cars to essential emergency use only. Beltrami notes a planned car pool on Low Gap Road to add parking when not in use. Finance committee members Ted Galletti and Burgess Williams will consider policy options.

Northrop executive ties to Watergate funds to defense deal

Northrop Corp. led by Thomas V. Jones, a major defense contractor, faced scrutiny as Herbert Kalmbach testified that Jones gave $75,000 in cash to pay Watergate defendants’ court costs. The $100 bills were handed to Nixon’s lawyer, with Kalmbach claiming the money funded a “special assignment” from a White House authority. Northrop’s F5E fighter contract and role in backing the Nixon Doctrine were noted.

Canning Pear Association maintains $115 per ton offer

In San Francisco on Tuesday California Canning Pear Association directors re offered processing pears at the July 10 prices, $115 per ton for First Grade Bartletts, $113 for B Hardy, $92 for Hail Grade Bartletts, and $69 for Second Grade Bartletts. The deal expires Monday July 23. Directors cited pear inventories well below 1972 levels and fruit cocktail inventories down 46 percent, with anticipated near record harvests in Mendocino and Lake counties. Association manager Cameron Girton said the small rise covers higher grower costs and could fit Phase 3 federal price controls, as Phase 4 provisions remain uncertain. Board members Stan Hildreth and Leroy Thomas represent the area. Cedric Thornton was absent due to illness.
