Cubs sweep Giants as Banks and Phillips pace 9-0 win

Ernie Banks hit a three run homer and Adolfo Phillips added a grand slam to power the Chicago Cubs to a 9-0 win over San Francisco in the opener. Banks and Santo starred again in the nightcap a 3-2 Cubs victory. Ray Culp earned his seventh win. Gaylord Perry took the loss. Giants top prospect Herbel struggled before lows. Henderson and Etheridge appeared in both games as SF dropped further in the standings.

Hardtop Honors Spread Across Friday Night Races

Friday night NCAA hardtop races produced multiple winners in heats and mains. McCulloch Ties World Hurdle Mark at Pan American Trials

Earl McCulloch, 21, of the Trojan football team, timed 13.2 seconds in the 110 meter hurdles to equal the world record set in 1959 and tied in 1960. Davenport finished second in 13.8. The trials at the University of Minnesota set a wind of 3.9 mph, within legal limits, as Warmerdam added four teammates to thePan American squad. The team departs for Winnipeg in two weeks.
