Carter wins nomination by acclamation at Democratic convention

Jimmy Carter secured the Democratic presidential nomination at Madison Square Garden after months of campaign and the Ohio delegation sealed his victory with a roll call final tally of 2,23814 votes. He named Sen. Walter Mondale of Minnesota as his running mate and Carter prepared to address the convention and rally support for the October showdown against Ford Reagan. Mondale accepted and praised a Carter administration as the greatest presidency this country has ever had.

Mondale Chosen As Carter Running Mate For 1980 Ticket

At the Democratic National Convention in New York Jimmy Carter picked Walter Mondale as his liberal, Minnesota senator running mate. Carter called Mondale the best person to lead the country if needed, and Mondale expressed commitment to aid in a future administration.

IRS closes oil tax loophole may lift fuel prices

The IRS ruled that oil firms must prove foreign payments are taxes not royalties to claim credits. Royalties are deductible up to 50 percent, taxes are fully deductible, possibly raising U.S. taxes and lowering earnings. Analysts cite potential billions in higher costs passed to consumers.

Firefighters from Ukiah and the State Division of Forestry responded to two-acre grass fires along East Side Road on property owned by Winifera Vineyards. The cause remains under investigation.

Red pencils out for final budget hearings in Mendocino

The Mendocino County Board of Supervisors prepares for six days of final budget hearings starting Monday as they confront a preliminary budget about 675000 higher than last year and a stalled salary agreement with the Mendocino County Employees Association. The next negotiations are planned tonight with a two year contract proposal on the table, while no strike talk exists. Assessed valuation rose 10 percent enabling a potential tax rate reduction amid calls to cut further. Hearings cover multiple departments with a pending decision on federal revenue sharing due December 31 1976 and a priority funding list for outside agencies if Congress acts.

Ukiah Planning Grants Two New Restaurants and 19-Unit Apartment

Ukiah planners approved site plans for a new two story restaurant and office at 295 S State Street with a waiver of parking requirements awaiting city council action. They also authorized plans for a dining and cocktail facility at Ukiah Municipal Airport by Was King Corp pending lease approval. A 19 unit apartment complex at 745 S Dora Street was approved with drainage mitigation stipulations.

Collision fatal to Lake driver on Highway 29 intersection

A 60-year-old Lakeport man, Chester Alan Richardson, was killed when his pickup was hit broadside by a southbound auto driven by Robert Reed Jr., 39, of Lower Lake, at 7:05 a.m. near the Highway 29 and Soda Bay Road junction. Reed was hospitalized at Lakeside. Jones Mortuary handling arrangements.
