Archery Deer Hunting Gains Popularity Across Counties

Drought may help bowmen in the early archery season as deer concentrate near water holes. In recent years archery participation rose from about 17,700 in 1961 to a record 39,200 bowmen in 1964, with 348 deer recorded and 334 in another year. The sport expands across Mendocino to Ventura counties, plus Nevada, Placer, El Dorado, Amador, Monterey, Los Angeles and Yolo. Archers defend the early bows against rifle seasons and note that deer haven’t yet been spooked by crowds, though some fear overharvesting and safety concerns persist.
