Clearlake Highlands Driver Killed In High Speed Crash
A Clearlake Highlands man, 54, Ira Jerome Brown, died when his car left Highway 281 east of Kelseyville, rolled over, and struck an oak. A 54-year-old passenger, Thomas Richard Roper of Los Banos, was injured. The crash occurred at 2:30 a.m. and the vehicle was traveling at high speed. The accident remains under investigation. Weekend accidents injure seven in Mendocino Co
Seven people were injured in five Mendocino County weekend crashes. In Ukiah a 22 year old rider and a 19 year old passenger were hurt when their motorcycle collided with a car on Gobbs Street near Highway 101 on ramp. A 17 year old from Willits was arrested for drunk driving and hit and run after allegedly striking a motorcycle on Highway 1 at Ten Mile Road and fleeing. A Fort Bragg rider, 38, suffered minor injuries in a 3:50 p.m. crash on Highway 101. an eastbound driver was detained. A Ukiah man, 39, sustained moderate head injuries in a single vehicle crash on Highway 101 north of Forsythe Creek. Two people were hurt Saturday in a single vehicle crash on Highway 20 east of Highway 1. a Palo Alto driver and a Moss Beach passenger were involved. A Talmage man, 20, had moderate injuries after losing control of his motorcycle on Ukiah Boonville Road near Stipp Lane. No details available on a Sunday evening crash on S State Street in Ukiah.

Stubborn Lake fire controlled with minimal damage
Lake County’s worst fire of the 1976 77 year was brought under control Saturday at 5 p.m. after burning 1600 acres west of Middletown. There were no structures lost and one injury when a Division of Forestry firefighter collapsed. The fire started Friday at 1:50 p.m. with seven air tankers dropping retardant from three airports. At the peak, 240 men, five bulldozers and 15 engines fought the blaze. A Super PBY tanker based at Ukiah Airport joined the effort, with loading at Sonoma County Airport. A Friday five acre fire near Lower Lake was controlled 15 minutes after ignition. Authorities continue to investigate causes. The Super PBY replaces Tanker 94 at Ukiah. aircraft operate with limited retardant capacity and differ by base.
