Fatal accident toll from Fourth of July weekend in Mendocino Lake counties

Three people died on Mendocino and Lake County highways during the Fourth of July weekend. William Henry Corley, 26, of unknown origin, died in a six vehicle pile up on Highway 101 near Comminsky Station Rd after a head on crash with Craig Farwell Ortlieb, 37, of El Sobrante. Several others were seriously injured. A separate incident saved a one year old boy when dirt cushioned the impact of a backing truck at Indian Valley Dam. A dispatched Petaluma woman and her child escaped serious injury on Highway 101 near Ukiah after the car hit a divider and plunged down an embankment. Two San Jose women died in a crash on Highway 29 near Middletown. A total of 25 arrests for suspected intoxication and about 37 for minor offenses were reported by local authorities. Funerals for the San Jose women were planned.

Nofi resigns as Ukiah FAA Flight Service head

Ray Nofi, a 31 year government veteran, retires after 24 years with the FAA ending his tenure as head of the Flight Service Station at Ukiah airport. Nofi, 50, and his wife Lucy raised three children and plan to stay in Ukiah. He began in the Navy during World War II era service, then joined the FAA in 1960 at New York LaGuardia, later moving to Red Bluff and finally Ukiah in 1968.

Wet July Record Reaches Oklahoman Valley

A brief storm dumped .83 inches of rain by 11 am statewide, making July the wettest on record. Residents checked calendars as a freak summer shower drizzled and poured across the valley, contributing the season’s peak rainfall to date.

Death toll 545 in holiday traffic report

United Press International tallies final Fourth of July period deaths with 545 traffic deaths, 187 drownings, 8 plane deaths and 73 other fatalities totaling 813. California led with 57 traffic deaths, while Texas, New York, Ohio, North Carolina and Wisconsin also posted high counts. The 1972 four day peak was 760.

Ukiah Unified to elect president at 1974-75 meeting

Attorney Charles Bell may relinquish the board chair as Ukiah Unified schedules its 1974-75 organizational meeting Tuesday at 7 30 p m the district office to elect officers and discuss year end and year begining business including a possible closed personnel session. The agenda includes planning for Redwood Valley school and a report on a meeting about small school funding for Potter Valley high school.

Frontier Days parade winners named in Willits event

Hundreds lined Willits streets on July 4 for the Independence Day parade closing four days of Frontier Days. Judges named winners across many entries including Club Float Sr. and Jr. prizes, Novelty, Parade Horse, youngest rider, fancy dress divisions, color guards, mounted groups, and best drawn vehicle with the Willits 4H Club taking the Float Sweepstake trophy.

Willits Men Charged After High Speed Police Chase

Two Willits men, John Ernest Clatty and Stephen Dewayne Pickering, face multiple charges after a Saturday chase with four officers. Clatty, 20, is charged with resisting arrest and reckless driving amid prior warrants. Pickering, 20, is jailed on assaulting an officer interference with an officer and aiding a felon in an attempted escape. Officers Gray, Goss, Apodaca, and Smith pursued a vehicle driven by Clatty, who fled on foot on Central Street. Pickering allegedly tried to run over the officers before authorities stopped the vehicle and captured Clatty.
