Early Voting Round for Southside School Bonds Underway

A light morning turnout reported at 11 am with 176 ballots cast at Pomolita School on South Dora. Ukiah Elementary District has 5758 registered voters eligible for a 151000 construction bond, plus 354000 state borrow to finish financing for a new school on Helen and Dora streets. Polls at Pomolita will stay open until 7 pm, with Jack Simpson noting late voters can cast ballots. Votes will be tallied after polls close at the school building.

Guzman Faces Murder Charge in Guatemala

Guatemala City UP reports former President Jacobo Arbenz Guzman faces murder charges filed by student Jose Maria Palacios over the 1949 killing of Col. Francisco Javier Arana. The case delays Arbenz's chance for safe conduct from the country as Mexico contemplates an appeal.

Adjusters Put Damage at Yokago School Fire

Insurance adjusters estimate Yokago school damages between 50000 and 60000 dollars after a May 22 fire razed the building and equipment. Reconstruction bids may be sought later this month. Juvenile arson suspects remain under investigation by Fire Chief Al Behtel and questioned by officials.

Northwestern California will have fair conditions today tonight and Friday with some high clouds north of Ukiah and coastal fog at night and morning. Temperatures range from 86 in Ukiah to 48 in Napa with northwest winds 12 to 25 mph along the coast. Fort Bragg area remains foggy at night and morning but otherwise fair today and Friday with similar light northwest winds near the coast.

North West plywood strike expands to M and M plants

The 18 day old lumber strike widens in Oregon as M and M Wood Working Company plywood plants in Albany Portland and Lyons join the walkout. About 1150 more workers idle raising total to roughly 111000 nationwide. Mediation efforts push for resumed wage talks with AFL CIO unions and employers.

Fallon Seismic Aftershocks Hit Fallon Nevada

A sequence of aftershocks followed Tuesday's Fallon quake with one strong tremor of magnitude 5 lasting about 10 minutes. Seismographs at UC recorded all shocks. City officials estimate damage to buildings and irrigation systems may approach $100,000, says Claude Smith of Fallon Standard.

Four Hurt In Ukiah Area Highway Crash

Four people sustained minor injuries in a car truck collision 15 miles north of Ukiah at 10 45 a m. Charles A Lawrence 39 of Seattle drove the car and Steve Enrich 35 of Merced operated the truck. Fenrich blamed brakes in the truck and was cited for defective brakes. Injured in the Lawrence car were Jean Lawrence Adam Aitchison Charles F Lawrence and Charles Lawrence. Also injured on River road Calpella was Jean Neal 26 who rode with Willie A Anderson.

Blood Bank Visit to Ukiah on July 18

The blood bank unit returns to Ukiah on Sunday July 18 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Veterans Memorial building on Seminary avenue. Donations to local reserve funds and blood replacements may be made during the visit with volunteer technicians physicians and nurses assisting the staff and other tasks handled by local service clubs.

City approves Safeway land swap and park plans

Ukiah city council completed the Safeway land swap, giving the old ball park to Safeway and accepting the $100,000 Church and School site. Safeway will pay $500 a month rent during new building construction. A new larger supermarket is planned for South State street with future use for part of the old park. Council also authorized bids for water gas lines curbs and gutters linked to the 1954-55 budget with bids opening August 4. Also approved removal of an 85 percent oak tree at Live Oak and Grove Streets.

County Assessment Rises by 2 Million for 1954-55

San Francisco reporting shows the 1954-55 county tax base at 54,107,585, an increase of 2,146,368 over the prior year. County assessor W. Ek. Ford presented the figures to the Board of Supervisors as Graves plans a campaign visit to Oregon with Adlai Stevenson.

Secretary of State John Foster Dulles voiced high confidence that Red China will not be seated in the United Nations or its agencies in the foreseeable future. Eureka woman to face U S charge for illegal moonshine

Fay Clifford Moody of Eureka will be charged by the U S attorney in Sacramento with operating an illegal still. Federal agents seized two small stills near Loleta, five miles south of Eureka, processing corn and sugar mash at about 100 gallons daily, expected to yield corn whisky.

French Ambush Near Hanoi Against Red Troops

French High Command reported Franco Viet Nam forces ambushed Red troops nine miles southeast of Hanoi. About 80 rebels were killed or captured, with 41 killed and 39 taken prisoner. The attack targeted an advancing Communist patrol believed to be part of three divisions moving toward Hanoi from the Red River Delta. The event occurred at Mat Sinh, near the Hanoi corridor to Haiphone.

Czech border guards call off a 6 am meeting with West German police to discuss seven American servicemen held in the Czech Republic. A Czech major did not appear, sending a passport official instead and claiming Prague summoned him. Two American intel officers waited in the rain for updates on July 4 captives.

Police Arrest Two Suspects in Miami Kidnaping

In Miami a seven year old girl Judith Ann Roberts was buried after a Jewish funeral as detectives search the city for clues in a brutal kidnapping rape and strangling case. Police have questioned 30 to 40 individuals including a 24 year old bar employee a 41 year old laborer with prior indecent exposure and a 26 year old dishwasher found asleep in a vacant house. No definite suspect yet as investigators press to solve the homicide and bring the killer to justice.

Judge Takes Buhn Case Home Under Advisement

Judge Ralph McGee of Amador County heard Norman Buhn former Mendocino County agricultural commissioner seek $1500 in wages for November December and January. Three board members testified Buhn requested reappointment November 2 1953 and was told to attend November 16. Buhn allegedly said Mendocino county has no agricultural commissioner. The board appointed Ted Erickson Jr. Buhn denied making the remark and said he attended November 16 but was told he need not be present. District attorney argued Buhn abandoned office. Buhn's attorney argued resignation must be written.

Puerto Rican Terrorists Get Long Terms

Washington four Puerto Rican terrorists who fired on the House of Representatives on March 1 received maximum prison terms. Lolita Lebron, 34, got 16 years eight months to 50 years. Rafael Cancel Miranda, Andres Figueroa Cordero, and Irving Flores Rodriguez received 25 to 75 years each. They were convicted of assault with a deadly weapon and the three men faced five counts of assault with intent to kill. Lebron was found innocent on that charge.
