Late employee cites strong excuse amid citywide power brief

Miss Red wood Empire queen pageant opens Aug 25

Entries for the 1977 Miss Redwood Empire pageant are released with preparations underway. Contestants must be 16 to 22 years old, residents of Mendocino County for six months and California for one year, and never married. The first 12 entrants qualify. The pageant is on opening night at 8 p.m. with Lyn Lucchetti coordinating and Charlotte Colombini as emcee and entertainer.

Three deaths mar holiday weekend in Ukiah area

Over the holiday weekend two Ukiah families mourned losses as an 18 year old Ukiah girl died after a motorcycle crash near Fort Bragg and Sally Munson 53 died in a Friday fire on Boonville Road. A Clearlake Oaks woman Velma Fortner 69 died in a Lake County two car crash. Seventeen people were injured in Mendocino County crashes. The Uki ah CHP reported the 18 year old Cindy Carkin died at Mendocino Coast Hospital after a 2 20 p m crash on Highway 20 near Highway 1. The other fatalities included 53 year old Sally Munson and 69 year old Velma Fortner. Multiple injuries occurred in various crashes across the region.

Record Fourth of July Traffic Toll Tops Seventies Mark

United Press International reports a holiday surge on California roads as 67 people die in accidents during the Fourth of July weekend. National toll across the nation reaches 574 deaths from 6 p.m. Friday to midnight Monday, with total weekend fatalities at 725 including drownings and plane crashes. California highway patrol notes auto traffic expected to set a record.

Ukiah Council Sets Busy Agenda for Wednesday Night

The Ukiah city council will convene at 8 p m with plans to reappoint commissioners to planning recreation and parks and to approve a power purchase agreement with the Northern California Power Agency. Public hearings at 8 15 address revenue sharing funds and an added social element to the general plan. At 10 p m the city attorney will report on an agreement with Ukiah Unified School District to run a conservation program and Mayor Jack Simpson will speak on water conservation.

Bicentennial celebrations mark nation's 201st year

Americans marked the Bicentennial fading into the third century with parades picnics speeches and fireworks. Philadelphia hosted a parade celebrating firsts including the 1805 founding of the citys art museum and Franklin electricity discovery while San Francisco held a Golden Gate Park concert and Candlestick Park fireworks and New York observed a sailing ships fleet with a 50 pound cannon salute.

Northwestern California Weather Outlook

Northwestern California may see a slight shower chance in the northern mountains with otherwise fair conditions through Wednesday. Patchy coastal low clouds will persist and gusty northwest winds will affect the coast. Temperatures rise modestly on Wednesday with Fort Bragg around 52 to 65 and Ukiah 55 to 90.
