Nixon Brezhnev fail to curb arms race at Moscow summit

Moscow reports say Nixon and Brezhnev closed their seven day summit with limited pacts on underground nuclear tests, defense missiles, and a plan to renegotiate the 1972 SALT accord. Kissinger warned that failure to solve strategic superiority could invite unimaginable nuclear risk by 1977.

July Fourth Fireworks and Parades Sweep Mendocino County

Ukiah and Redwood Valley host the 12th Black Bart Days with an 11am parade, trophies, a playday at Redwood Riders arena, and a watermelon contest. Willits and Fort Bragg join Frontier Days activities with rodeos, a street dance, and a noon Rotary barbecue. Lake County features two firework displays at Clear Lake and a Night Boat Parade themed Let Freedom Ring Heritage. Coastal towns plan a Todd’s Point display as offices close for the holiday.

Ridge Wheel Properties suit stayed by board

The board of supervisors tentatively stayed its suit against Ridge Wheel Properties and Ridgewood Park and allowed sales of paved road lots as bidding follows each section. Ridge Wheel's Bob Schwan and attorney Leo Cook outlined a plan to extend the $260,000 performance bond to each segment and pave 3.6 miles now with the remaining 5.4 miles by November 1975.

Grand jury selected for 1974 75 fiscal year

A 11 member grand jury, eight women and three men, was impaneled in Superior Court with Mrs. Ben Oswald named foreman. Members hail from Ukiah, Fort Bragg, Willits, and outlying towns. Judge Timothy O'Brien outlined three powers: indicting public offenses, investigating alleged officials misconduct, and reviewing county government functions.

Ukiah man held on murder charges in mother’s shooting

A 24-year-old Ukiah man, Tommy Stout, is in custody on murder charges after reporting his mother Maria Stout, 65, was shot at their Milani Drive home. Deputies arrived around 5 a.m. to find her dead from a head wound caused by a .45 revolver. The incident, which occurred between 4 and 5 a.m., left only the two at home. The suspect told investigators the gun discharged accidentally and the case remains under investigation. Zimmerman's Mortuary handling arrangements.

Alberta King eulogized as peaceful warrior at funeral

In Atlanta the funeral for Alberta King 69 widow of slain Martin Luther King Sr. drew over 600 attendees including Mrs. Gerald Ford and Gov. Carter. Abernathy lauded her as a reservoir of courage and the most peaceful warrior of the 20th century. Police and FBI probe potential conspiracy as Marcus Chenault 23 is charged with the double slaying.

Vacant judicial seat eyed by county attorneys

Lake County tries to fill the Superior Court judgeship left by Ralph Devoto who retired June 10. Applicants include W J Harpham Philawford Richard Freeborn and possibly Gefford Wright with political and eligibility considerations noted. A law committee reviews candidates and may appoint a floating judge if a deadlock occurs.
