Fire Destroys Plant as Tanks Burn Near Diesel Notes

A fire damaged a building housing a plant and tanks, with two 1500 gallon trucks storing oils and lubricants. Four bulk storage tanks holding diesel and gasoline lay 75 feet away, not seriously threatened. The blaze, sparked by dry grass, caused thick smoke as spectators stood nearby. damage estimated at $90,000. Fire chief L G McNaught reported first alarms.

Empire Fair Premiums Now Being Distributed

According to secretary-manager Jim Tocher the Empire Fair expects more entries than last year due to later dates and a healthy community attitude. He says there is a place for everyone to exhibit and invites all to participate. Premium books are available at the Fairgrounds Administration office.

John Poulos Wins Honors at Hastings Law School

John Poulos son of Mr and Mrs Paul Poulos of Potter Valley earned honors while studying at Hastings School of Law in San Francisco. A Ukiah native and Potter Valley graduate, he was valedictorian, earned a Stanford BA, and works with Gary Ames and Frye in San Diego awaiting the California Bar exam in August. He has two brothers and his parents run Maple City Cafe in Ukiah. he previously served as supervisor for the Second district.

Eureka Man Loses Car and Trailer in Mendocino Lake Incident

Logan Rawles of Eureka backed his car and trailer down a Lake Mendocino ramp at 2 15 a m Sunday. He bailed out as the vehicle went off the ramp and both car and trailer were recovered later from 18 feet of water.

Tax Roll Largest in History for Mendocino County

County Assessor Webb Brown presented the 1962 tax roll showing a total of 78,849,870 including secured and unsecured property. The increase over 1961 is 5,755,030 with notable gains in land values and improved property, plus higher solvent credits and exemptions mainly for veterans. The base is 63,845,750 using last year’s Public Utility Roll figure.

Man Surrenders Gun At Police Request

Gerald Bowman of Ukiah surrendered a loaded .38 caliber Colt revolver at the Chef early today after Ukiah police requested he relinquish the weapon. Officers cited a city ordinance against carrying firearms and kept the gun for safekeeping.

Soblen in Serious Condition After Onboard Knife Attack

Soviet spy Dr. Robert A. Soblen, en route back to the United States to serve a life sentence, was reported in serious but slightly improved condition after he slashed his wrist and stabbed himself aboard an El Al Boeing 707. US marshals and Israeli police doctors attended him as he bled, with officials saying plans for surgery and transport to New York remained uncertain.

Bakersfield Driver Injured in Highway 101 Crash

Pat Hunter, 95, of Bakersfield, escaped with minor injuries when his pickup hit an embankment twice near Willits on Highway 101 at 6 45 p m. The Highway Patrol charged excessive speed for conditions. Hunter was taken to Howard Memorial Hospital in Willits.

Six Death Row Inmates Take Guards Hostage at San Quentin
