Government to curb home heating oil price swings

Energy chief William E. Simon told a Senate panel the heating oil crunch is manageable but far from over. He said fluctuations arise from the gap between cheaper domestic oil and pricier imports and that the federal government will act this week to end the volatility.

Mat star Ernest G. Lockhart dies in Sonoma crash

A requiem mass was said for Ernest G. Lockhart 21 at St Mary’s Church. He died at 3:23 a.m. Friday after a two lane Highway 101 crash near Independence Lane north of Healdsburg. Lockhart a Ukiah football lineman and wrestler and Napa College student was en route to Ukiah when his car hit a pole and flipped. He is survived by his parents and siblings. Funeral arrangements were made by Zimmerman Mortuary with a rosary at Pinoleville Road and a requiem mass today. burial in Ukiah Cemetery.

Timber report bill spurs questions over European tour

Senator Randolph Collier billed California for a two week European trip with his wife and infant daughter raising the total state cost to 7 748 for him and two aides. The trip intended as a timber taxation study drew criticism with a fellow senator calling the report not worth filing.

Ukiah Board moves toward buying Low Gap property for high school

Ukiah Unified School District moves to speed negotiations for 60 plus acres on Low Gap Road owned by Bay Area developer Andy Beckstoffer. The board authorizes notices of intention to purchase and to condemn if needed, and to hire legal counsel to handle negotiations for a future high school campus serving 2,000 to 2,500 students. The district has about 2.5 million in state funds plus hopes for more, with a potential June lease purchase ballot requiring a simple majority.

Bartolomie seeks sixth term as Mendocino Sheriff Coroner

Mendocino County Sheriff Coroner Reno Bartolomie announced today his bid for a sixth four year term in the June 4 primary. He touted a modern, professional department with open door access, resident deputies, a neighborhood watch trial in Willits, and drug abuse and mental health program support. His 88 sworn staff serve countywide as deputies and coroners. (Cont'd on Pg. 10)

Gerry Grader named to NC Commission

Fort Bragg businesswoman and civic affairs leader Gerry Grader was appointed to succeed her husband William Grader on the North Coast Regional Coastal Zone Commission. Grader, chairman since the commission’s formation in November 1972, was named by James Mills, president pro tem of the State Senate, on the recommendation of Sen. Randolph Collier.

Ukiah man held in death of son

A 57 year old Ukiah man faced a murder arraignment after his 27 year old son Marvin Laseter was shot to death at 964 N State Street. Police arrived minutes after a dawn disturbance as both families gathered. The suspect reportedly drank prior to a scuffle over motorcycle keys and was treated for minor injuries before booking. Coroner results were pending.
