Ukiah Wildcats Dominate Vallejo Apachees In Close Battle

Ukiah led by strong defense and balanced scoring as Craig Chandler and teammates like John Yoast Tim Piver and Ian Seaton pushed Vallejo early then withstood a late Apache rally. Vallejo’s Herb Wright and Morrie Elmer battled. Ukiah’s B squad also fought hard but fell 1 point. Covelo beat Laytonville 78-54 and Hogan edged Santa Rosa.

Sandy Koufax Wins Rochester Medal for Effort

Dodger star Sandy Koufax missed the Rochester ceremony due to a 20 inch snowfall and flight delays after a 21 hour travel ordeal. He traveled nearly 4000 miles to receive the Professional Athlete of the Year belt, but icy landings forced him to turn back. Jo Antonelli accepted the award on his behalf from a distance.

Jockeys Rally To 20 20 Tie In Jockey Bowl

Emilio Iglesias starred for Santa Anita and the jockeys as they battled Garden Grove All Stars in the second annual Jockey Bowl at Santa Anita. Iglesias ran 10 yards for a late TD and added a two point conversion after previously scoring on a 74 yard pass from Alex Maese. He totalled 140 yards on 14 carries as the teams finished level.

Dan Gurney Wins Riverside 500 for Fourth Time

Riverside California reports Dan Gurney won the Riverside 500 stock car race for the fourth time, earning about 40 dollars per mile with a total purse of roughly 20,080 dollars. He drove a 1966 Ford, averaged 97.946 mph, and finished five hours five minutes and 59 seconds, ahead of David Pearson and Paul Goldsmith.

Airman LC Church Wertz of Erie Pennsylvania captured the United States open indoor archery championship by one point Sunday. He posted 583 of 600 to take the $1 000 first prize and a major title in Las Vegas. Former champions Jim Pickering and Bill Bednar tied for second at 582 with Bednar winning the runner up via shootout. amateur winner Chuck McCormick triumphed in the same flight with 573. Roma Squibb won the women's open crown with 55, while Susanne Gunder claimed the women's amateur title with 541.
